MISSION STATEMENT:
The Goddard High School Physical Education staff believes that each and every student can
achieve excellence regardless of size, maturity, coordination, body type, or other physical capability. We
as a department are concerned with developing a student’s positive attitude towards physical education
that will last a lifetime. Goddard physical education strives to maintain an activity based program while
teaching lifelong skills and achieving physical fitness in a safe and enjoyable environment.
NASPE PHYSICAL EDUCATION STANDARDS FOR THE CLASS…..
Standard 1: Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a
variety of physical activities.
Standard 2: Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as
they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities.
Standard 3: Participates regularly in physical activity.
Standard 4: Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.
Standard 5: Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical
activity settings.
Standard 6: Values physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and/or social
interaction.
GRADING:
Each student will have the opportunity to earn 10 points per day.
DAILY GRADING PROCEDURE
0 – 1 (0 - 10%) Absent or no attempt to participate.
2 - 3 (20 - 30%) Irresponsibility - Does not come prepared to class, limited participation.
4 – 5 (40 – 50%) Needs Attention – Listens to instructions and explanations when reminded. Follows
rules, routines, and procedures for safety when directly supervised. Participates when encouraged to do
so. Needs support of the teacher to work with others and has difficulty resolving conflicts.
6 – 7 (60 - 70%) Satisfactory – Listens to instructions and explanations, generally follows rules,
routines, and procedures for safety. Willing to participate in most tasks. Evidence that confidence is
developing. Works with others and, when given support, will take on the responsibility for assigned
roles. Generally plays fairly and interacts safely with equipment.
8– 9 (80 - 90%) Good – Consistently listens to instructions and explanations, follows rules, routines, and
procedures of safety. Willingly participates, showing confidence and a positive attitude toward physical
activity. Works co-operatively, assumes responsibility for assigned roles, and provides encouragement to
others. Plays fairly and interacts safely with equipment.
10 – (100%) Outstanding – Listens intently to instructions and explanations, providing support to
classmates when appropriate. Follows rules, routines, and procedures for safety. Exhibits a positive
attitude, high level of participation, and willingly tries new task in confident manner. Works with others
cooperatively and collaboratively supports students of diverse skills, abilities and cultural backgrounds.
Provides classmates with positive constructive feedback. Demonstrates etiquette and fair play. Interacts
with others and with equipment safely. Displays leadership skills and assumes responsibility for assigned
roles.

Points will also be awarded for the following assessments (quizzes, pre/post skill tests, physical
fitness testing).
Daily points consist of 85% of your grade. Tests/assessments consist of 15% of your grade.
You will receive an effort and attitude grade at the end of the semester for the entire semester,
with effort consisting of 50 points and attitude consisting of 50 points for a total of 100 points.
The 100 points will be a part of the 15% of your tests/assessment overall grade.
The student’s overall grade for the class goes as follows…..
A=100-90%
B=89-80%
C=79-70%
D=69-60%
F=59% and below
DAILY PROCEDURES:







All students will report to their assigned locker room prior to the bell ringing.
The students will have 5 minutes to dress out after the bell rings.
After the students dress out, the students will take a seat in the locker room as role will be called.
I will then dismiss the students to the gym for the instant activity.
At the end of class I will dismiss the students to the locker room to shower and change. They are
to wait on the cement by the stairs. NOT ON THE STAIRS!
They are not to use the elevator unless told otherwise
The students may be dismissed when the bell rings.
DRESS CODE:
The following dress requirements have been adopted to maintain consistency of dress in the department
and USD 265. All students are required to dress appropriately for physical education classes.



Uniforms: A light colored t-shirt with sleeves. Dark colored shorts (e.g. black, navy, or royal
blue). Shorts must be fingertip length! No cut-off sweats or jeans. Shoes should be any gum or
tennis type shoes with white socks. Gloves will not be worn to physical education classes except
for weight lifting specific gloves.
Students not dressing for class WILL still be required to participate in all activities.
Bracelets, necklaces, and looped earrings should not be worn during class.
DRESSING ROOMS:




Each student will be checked out a lock and assigned a small locker. Your lock is your
responsibility. If you lose your lock, you will owe $6 by the end of the semester. Big lockers are
to be used only during your class period, with your gym items put back in your small locker at the
end of the period. Other students need big lockers each period for books and street clothes.
Students are not to share lockers or combinations with other students or request teachers to open
other students’ lockers.
No FOOD OR DRINK may be bought or consumed during class. Do not bring FOOD OR
DRINK into the locker rooms or any of the physical education rooms; you will be asked to throw
the items in the trash. Do not bring valuables to class. Do not bring or use any electronic
equipment in any of the physical education rooms including cell phones, radios/walkmans and
laser pointers.
Students are responsible for locking up their valuables during Physical Education class. The
Physical Education staff asks that valuables such as money, jewelry, cell phones and iPods not be
brought to class and if so students are responsible for the security of them.
MAKE-UP:


The student will have to write a 500 word (approx. 1 page) report over anything to do with health,
athletics, physical fitness, or a sport related topic for excused absences only for each day absent. I
WILL NOT ACCEPT TYPED REPORTS! Non-suits may not be made up.
If a student misses multiple days in a row due to an uncontrollable circumstance, he can talk with
me about an alternative make-up plan.
ATTENDANCE AND TARDIES:







All students will be in the locker room before the tardy bell rings.
The student must have a doctor or parent note to be excuse from participation in class. Parent note
is required each day.
Excused tardies are through the office or teacher by written note only!
Early dismissal from class is through the office with written pass only!
All absences from class require a 500 word (approx.. 1 page) report as stated above under
MAKE-UP.
All students must remain in locker room until dismissed by teacher.
Tardies will be handled as followed….

1st Warning issued by teacher and partial loss of daily points.
2nd Teacher contacts parent, notifies attendance, partial loss of daily points.
3rd Teacher assigns 30 minute detention before or after school, partial loss of daily
points.
4th Referral sent to administrator.
DISCIPLINE PROCEDURES

All students are expected to be to class on time, suit out in required uniform, and participate with
classmates in a positive environment. Students who do not suit up will still be expected to
participate in all class activities.

1st non-participation will be a warning and a loss of daily points. The student will
have to write a report during the entire class.
2nd non-participation will result in a parent/guardian notification, as well as a loss of
daily points. The student will have to write a report during the entire class.
3rd non-participation will result in a parent/guardian notification, as well as a loss of
daily points. The student will have to write a report during the entire class. The
student will also receive an office referral.
Non participation is with excused note only.
All students are expected to follow teachers’ instructions and stay on task the entire class period.
Failure to comply with teachers’ instruction will result in the following…

Objectives of the class can be met through regular attendance and participation. Performance will be
measured daily by attendance, dressing properly for class, and participation in the activity. You will be
required to bring paper and pencil/pen from time to time. I will share other expectations and policies of
the class with you at the beginning of the year.
