Exercise #1: Summary [Get the Gist]
In exactly twenty-five words, this is where you will explain and summarize the contents
of this section. Tell the interested teacher what the section contains.
Exercise #2: Vocabulary
The sentences must be about your family, sports team, or activity during the summer. Do
not copy the sentence from the dictionary. No points if not about one of the subject above.
Vocabulary word: part of speech, definition and sentence using an action verb.

Exercise #3: Analysis Paragraph
At this point of your assignment, write your analysis paragraph. Begin with a topic
sentence that will introduce the paragraph. Then have 2 or 3 details to support your topic
sentence. For each detail be sure to explain the detail. Also include a relevant quote from the
book from that section. Be sure to explain the significance of the quote after you insert the
quote. Tell me the page number where you found the quote at the end of the quote in
parenthesis. (47). I would have at least 8 sentences, but once you reach 14 sentences, you may
have strayed onto another paragraph. THIS IS THE SECTION THAT STUDENTS LOSE THE
MOST POINTS. DO NOT WRITE A SUMMARY BUT ANALYSIS.
[Formatting: the paper is double spaced the entire page; font 12; one inch margins, only the title
is centered after you finish with the informational material.]
If you follow the example and do not add what you have done in the past or think should be done
your grade will be higher. You may also email me at lbates@goddardusd.com. Frequently I
check my email in the summer in July and August.
