Strategic Issues Brief Goal Team: Invest in Each Other Prepared by: Strategic Issue from 2006 Situational/Needs Analysis: #12…current faculty & staff have unrealized potential Notable internal changes related to Strategic Issue: Currently have “Individualized Learning Plans” for faculty and are working towards this for staff. Still don’t have succession management or talent management process in place. There are a growing number of retirements leaving vacancies in key areas of leadership at the college. While we are getting more applicants, we are not necessarily getting higher quality of applicants. Are we preparing our employees to be ready for these positions? This issue will not resolve itself as we see more “baby boomers” retiring. Valencia Enterprises continues to work with HR for staff professional development plan and performance appraisal process which should be coming out in 2010. Development means more than workshops and conferences, we will be teaching managers to help grow employees and assist them in setting appropriate career goals which will be a required component of the performance review process. The PDP work will help start the conversation, but there may still be gaps in tracking and assessing outcomes to determine applicability to their career goals. Notable external changes related to Strategic Issue: Although the number of applications for open positions has increased, it will be increasingly challenging to find qualified applicants to fill those positions. The economy will continue to drive institutional funding for professional growth and development. The continuing growth of our community and subsequent growth of Valencia to new campuses and centers will also provide the need to grow and develop our employees. Update(s) suggested to the Issue Statement and/or to the Situational/Needs Analysis narrative: While there has been some progress on this issue, this issue continues to be unresolved.
