CLASS TITLE:
STUDENT SERVICES COORDINATOR –
INTRAMURALS/ ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of The Vice President of Student Services, plan, organize, coordinate and
participate in a specialized area of Student Services; provide specialized information, assistance
and advice to students regarding college programs and services. Coordinate the intercollegiate
athletic program and represent MiraCosta College at Pacific Coast Conference meetings.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Under the direction of the Vice President of Student Services, plan, organize and oversee sports
events for students and staff in collaboration with the Athletic Equipment Attendant/Intramural
Assistant. Promote intramural events using all available means including but not limited to
classroom presentations, lunch hour demonstrations, emails, and flyers. Assist in ordering
necessary sports and safety equipment. Provide rules and strategy of play for intramural event
participants. Select and train student referees. Support the efforts of the Athletic Equipment
Attendant/Intramural Assistant to contact faculty and staff and maintain relationships to improve
group recruitment of students for participation in intramural events. As Athletic Director, provide
direction for the intercollegiate athletic program. Plan and carry out intercollegiate athletic
events and assure that required staff members are present. Research rules and guidelines for
specific sports and collect and distribute information about National Collegiate Athletic
Association (NCAA) Division I, II, III, and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA)
transfer requirements. Monitor and evaluate the academic performance of student athletes.
Assure that student athletes are eligible for competition. Assure compliance with rules and
regulations of the MiraCosta Athletic Department and the California Community College Athletic
Association as well as Title IX and other Federal requirements related to athletics. Manage
athletic facilities and schedule community events and rental of the gym, track, fields, and locker
rooms. Attend required conference regional and state meetings.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

Plan, organize and implement a variety of programs and activities to recruit, retain and
assist students. (E)

Provide specialized information and advice to students regarding educational and career
goals, academic progress, financial problems, disabilities and other related issues. (E)
3.
Develop and conduct studies and analyses to identify need for new programs and
services and evaluate the effectiveness of current programs. May assist in assessment
of student learning outcomes in applicable programs. (E)
4.
Develop and provide in-service programs and activities to promote instruction,
awareness, communication and personal and professional growth. (E)
5.
Maintain current knowledge of college curriculum, rules, regulations and guidelines.
6.
Refer students to campus departments or community organizations for assistance as
appropriate.

Compose electronic and printed information in media such as websites, newsletters, and
flyers, publicizing programs and services. (E)

Prepare statistical records and reports related to assigned student services areas;
gather and analyze program data. (E)
9.
Prepare and deliver oral presentations to various audiences including faculty staff, and
community groups.

Prepare and administer program budget as assigned; authorize expenditures according
to established guidelines. (E)

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Education and experience equivalent to a Baccalaureate degree and one year closely related
work experience.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California driver license.
WORK DIRECTION, LEAD AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides work direction and supervision for the head athletic coaches, Athletic Trainer, Equipment
Manager, student workers, and/or temporary workers.
CONTACTS:
Faculty, staff, students, parents, community members, and vendors.
PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Moderate physical activity with intermittent standing, walking, bending and stooping; occasional
light lifting and carrying of objects weighing 35 pounds or less; ability to work at computer for
extended periods of time, including repetitive use of computer keyboard, mouse or other control
devices; ability to travel to a variety of locations on and off campus as needed to conduct district
business.
EMOTIONAL EFFORT:
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships involving interactions and
communications personally, by phone and in writing with a variety of individuals and/or groups
of individuals from diverse backgrounds on a regular, on-going basis; ability to concentrate on
detailed tasks for extended periods of time and/or intermittently while attending to other
responsibilities; ability to work effectively under pressure on multiple tasks concurrently while
meeting established deadlines and changing priorities.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Primarily works in an office environment, but frequently conducts events in an outside
environment during possible inclement weather. Exposure to dust, dirt, heat, cold, fumes,
steam, moisture, noise, etc. Subject to frequent interruptions by individuals in person or by
telephone, intermittent exposure to individuals acting in a disagreeable fashion. May work at
any district location or authorized facility during day and/or evening hours with occasional
evenings and/or weekends on an as-needed basis. Occasional local travel may be requested.
