MIRACOSTA COLLEGE CLASS TITLE: MEDIA SERVICES TECHNICAL SPECIALIST BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of the Open Learning Coordinator, design, install and maintain audio/visual presentation and productions systems; receive, deliver and operate audio/visual and other instructional media equipment; provide audio/visual services to faculty, students and staff on campus and at satellite centers; perform repairs and preventive maintenance on media equipment and systems. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: 1. Design, install and upgrade audio-video systems including A/V presentation and production systems, public address systems, cable and satellite TV receiving and distributing systems; specify and order equipment and supplies needed for these systems; maintain computer CAD file and schematic drawings and configurations of as-builts for all campus A/V systems; run conduit and cabling to classrooms throughout campus for these systems. 2. Perform troubleshooting, preventive maintenance and mechanical repair of audio-visual equipment in the office and in the field; test all new a/v purchases; change belts and light bulbs, splice wires and clean contacts; calibrate and adjust equipment; order and maintain parts inventory; make equipment repair decisions; contact repair vendors; receive and test repaired equipment. 3. Receive faculty and staff requests for multimedia material, order those materials, and return to lending agencies. 4. Track A/V budgets and report status to supervisor. 5. Design, set up, and maintain schedule for faculty, staff, and students to reserve A/V and multimedia equipment and materials. 6. Schedule, distribute and pick up A/V equipment, films and materials to and from classrooms and offices; develop and implement procedures and materials to instruct faculty, staff, and students in the use of A/V and multimedia equipment. 7. Assist in creation of instructional multimedia projects for faculty and staff; provide voice narration for college promotional materials and MCC telephone system on-hold announcements. 8. Operate a wide variety of technical equipment including various types of projectors, recorders, sound equipment, satellite tuners and receivers, diagnostic instruments, video production equipment, sound mixers and monitors. 9. Determine equipment needs for instructional and special event uses; set up and operate such equipment, including A/V recording/playback systems, data/film projectors; contact with rental agencies when needed; purchase equipment and supplies as needed. 10. Maintain records, logs and files related to media equipment distribution, inventory, warranties, repair history and preventive maintenance schedules; contact manufacturers and MIRACOSTA COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT (E) = Essential job function 07/20/99 MEDIA SERVICES TECHNICAL SPECIALIST 2 sales representatives regarding the repairs and warranties; track ordering of equipment for A/V department. 11. Operate, maintain and program on-campus cable TV channel; upgrade and make design modifications as needed; maintain contact with cable company liaisons and technical staff. 12. Duplicate, splice, and edit audio and videotape; repair and clean miscellaneous multimedia software as needed; tape telecourses, satellite teleconferences and other programs requested by faculty and staff. 13. Supervise, train and assist Media Services Aide and student workers in proper procedures; schedule work hours and assign tasks for these workers. 14. Operate a District vehicle to pick up an deliver various items as needed and to execute all necessary aspects of the job. 15. Use computer CAD software, design, modify and/or adapt cabinetry and custom connector panels to fit changing a/v needs. 16. Plan, organize and coordinate Media Services operations, personnel and equipment; assure the timely and efficient distribution of media materials and equipment to various locations in the District. 17. Instruct faculty, staff and students in locating proper equipment for instructional use and in proper operation and care of equipment and systems; inform faculty, staff and students of available services; design and present workshops. 18. Perform video production and editing as well as audio mixdown for college promotional materials; train and assist staff and students in the use of post-production video and audio equipment; supervise off-air recordings of telecourses and other programs. 19. Consult with architects, planners and department personnel during planning, construction and installation of new and remodeled facilities; maintain membership on various construction and events committees as related to a/v systems and equipment. 20. Hire and supervise the work done by outside commercial a/v contractors and installers as needed; consult with electrical contractors, cable technicians and other technical contacts. 21. Perform related duties as assigned. ABILITY TO: Receive, process, operate and perform preventive maintenance on audio-visual and other instructional media equipment. Assist faculty, staff and students in the proper operation of a wide variety of audio-visual equipment including video production equipment. Operate District vehicle Train and provide work direction to student employees and Media Services Aides. Perform production and post-production work. Train others in audio-visual use and video production techniques. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Equivalent to: Associates degree in a related field and three years of closely related experience. LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Valid California driver license. District-approved DMV driving record. WORK DIRECTION, LEAD AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Media Services Aides and students; contracted production and technical personnel.
