CLASS TITLE:
GALLERY ASSISTANT
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Dean of Arts & International Languages, will assist with the promotion,
preparation, installation, lighting and the striking of all exhibitions. Greet gallery visitors, answer
questions and provide information on the artwork and artists exhibited within the varied contexts
of art history. Responsible for the punctual and secure opening and closing of the Kruglak
Gallery exhibitions. Monitors visitors to the gallery and ensures safety and protection of both
visitors and artwork. Assists with the day-to-day operations of the gallery.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
1.
Professionally greets and interacts with gallery visitors. Answers questions and discusses
artwork on display within an art- historical context. Discuss and communicate historical,
genre-specific information regarding the materials and techniques used in the art work on
display. (E)
2.
Assist with the promotion, preparation, installation, lighting and striking of all exhibitions.
Inventory the state of each static artwork and all electronic or mechanical artwork to be
sure all remains undamaged and in proper working order.( (E)
3.
Understands and has experience with a wide variety of art-making materials and
processes. Actively uses this knowledge to keep the works of art safe and secure by
preventing unauthorized persons from touching, handling, defacing, or otherwise
tampering with the works of art. (E)
4.
Accept and record receipt of artwork, equipment, and supplies. Maintain up-to-date
records. Maintains the historical archives of the gallery exhibitions, workshops, lectures,
and related press. (E)
5.
Helps to ensure the safety of the collection and integrity of the gallery by monitoring its
security, as well as environmental and other conditions, immediately reporting critical
incidents and any problems. (E)
6.
Set up, and operate a variety of digital and analogue media players, projectors and audio
equipment (for multi-media exhibitions such as video installation or audio exhibits).
7.
Inventory and assist with the procurement of supplies needed for exhibits, receptions, and
operation of the gallery.
8.
Update and maintain contact/mailing lists.
9.
Record the number of visitors to the gallery exhibitions on a daily basis.
10.
Assists with the setup of display illumination as appropriate for the varied needs and
media involved in each exhibit. Assures the maintenance and appropriate use of light
fixtures, in collaboration with Facilities staff.

Maintain cleanliness and presentability of gallery, display areas and equipment, including
storage and work areas by performing light housekeeping duties.
12.
Performs other duties as assigned.

well as student workers.

Operate a variety of office equipment including a computer terminal.

Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural,
ethnic and disability issues.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree with an emphasis in Studio Art, Art
History or Museum Studies and one year of closely related work experience.

25 pounds or less; ability to work at computer, including repetitive use of computer keyboard,
mouse or other control devices; ability to use hand tools for installation of all exhibitions and
artwork; ability to travel to a variety of locations on and off campus as needed to conduct district
business.
EMOTIONAL EFFORT:
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships involving interactions and
communications personally, by phone and in writing with a variety of individuals and/or groups
of individuals from diverse backgrounds on a regular, on-going basis; ability to concentrate on
detailed tasks for extended periods of time and/or intermittently while attending to other
responsibilities; ability to work effectively under pressure on multiple tasks concurrently while
meeting established deadlines and changing priorities.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Primarily works in an office environment and art gallery. Subject to frequent interruptions by
individuals in person or by telephone, intermittent exposure to individuals acting in a
disagreeable fashion. May work at any district location or authorized facility during day and/or
evening hours with occasional evenings, and/or weekends on an as-needed basis. Occasional
local travel may be requested.
