Slovní vyjádření k hodnocení bakalářské práce:
One positive aspect of this BP was that in the theoretical part describing rhetorical devices and types
of rhetorical speeches (1.1 and 1.2) the author included direct example references to the Letter and
other written and spoken texts by King. Thus she demonstrated a familiarity with these concepts and
how they could be exemplified by King’s work.
Also the extensive, often interesting historical background described in chapters 2 and 3 places King
and the Letter clearly in cultural perspective of mid-20th century America, including the role of
women in the Civil Rights Movement. There could be a question of the relevance of some of the
historical and biographical detail to the author’s main topic, e.g. connecting the way women are
represented (4.2) with Bible references in the Letter. Some pruning of unnecessary and unrelated
facts in chapters 2 and 3 might have been in order, but at least the author can be credited to having
erred on the side of having too much rather than too little information. In general there are too many
divisions into chapters and subchapters, and too much irrelevant information.
Unfortunately a major shortcoming throughout the other parts of the BP is the simplistic, naïve view
of religion and the Bible demonstrated, especially in the analytical sections. One example is referring
on several occasions to the “church” or the “church’s” attitude about a certain issue. The assumption
here is that there is one, monolithic, homogenized “Christian” religion, wherein - as the BP author
herself describes - divergent views existed even between different Baptist ministries (i.e. the “White
Ministers’ Statements,” a document which made arguments regarding race segregation antithetical to
King’s). On the other hand, the BP author’s specificity in describing figures of speech in this part
occasionally compensates for her lack of familiarity with religious issues.
The author can also be credited with coming full circle at the end of her work in 4.4 by mentioning
Barack Obama’s citation of King’s use of “God and the past” in his second inauguration speech and
comparing the American president’s rhetoric with King’s. More specificity could have made this
clearer.
Regarding language, overall the level of English is adequate for an ESL bachelor’s thesis, albeit
occasionally falling below the C1 level. Despite the shortcomings, in my opinion this BP meets the
standards of bachelor’s level work. In short, strong on rhetoric, weak on religion.
