A Philippine Experience of Surplus Vehicles Candy Lim Chiu Submitted to: Oxford Journal of Business and Economics – Oxford University Abstract The automotive industry in the Philippines is less developed than its ASEAN neighbors. Since the Asian Financial Crisis, the industry has struggled to regain steady market growth and experience moderate recovery. This can be attributed to government legislation and relaxed policies that are improving prospect for surplus vehicle market that would help expand the domestic industry. The trend led to a dramatic shift of Filipino consumer purchases from new to surplus vehicles. The main objective of the study is to determine what will be the long-term well-being of the entire nation with the presence of the surplus vehicle sector? This study focused on the development and structure of surplus vehicles or known as used cars and illustrate how reliable such commodities as a means of investment. With the impact of used cars completely different according to every country, is Philippine economy ready to accept the presence of the said sector?
