CROSS-CULTURAL RHETORIC Helle´s PWR Class at Stanford University & The Rhetoric Programme at Örebro University 15 October 2008 9.10 -10.40 am /18.10 – 19.40 Activity: Students will discuss humor and doxa from a cross-cultural and rhetorical point of view and also learn about how to use ICT for global communication. 1. Welcome and introduction, Eva (Örebro marratech room T 217) 2. Living betwixt two cultures, Helle 3. Collaborative group work (Stanford marratech rooms A-F) A. Introduce yourself and share a photo/ describe /draw a sketch of your wardrobe! B. Describe your universities and the surrounding areas. What is the weather like right now? C. Find out as much as you can about Thanksgiving and Lucia. The way it is celebrated, why and when and so on… Share your strongest memories from these celebrations. D. Share your favorite joke/stand up comedy skit/cartoon. Discuss if everyone understands and appreciates this type of humor. Why? Why not? Consider how humor reflects specific cultural backgrounds and is not necessarily universally funny? After the workshop: F. Write a 50 word reflection comment on the blog post entitled “Humor and Doxa” at ccr.stanford.edu by Friday 17 October. G.
