ASSIGNMENT #2: WINDOWS
CGS 2060 Sections 087 & 088
Spring Term, 1996

OBJECTIVE:
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 1996
Utilizing FILE MANAGER & CLIPBOARD and working
with files, directories, & disks. Using FTP to
transfer files from the Unix system to your disks.
1. Place a disk in the A: drive in your PC. Using Windows, format
the disk with a volume label. Use your first initial and your
last name (Contrary to DOS, Windows does not allow a space).
You are limited to 11 characters and cannot use a period.
2. Create the following SIX (6) directories:

3. Utilizing the file transfer protocol in the Windows environment,
transfer win2.doc and win2.frm in your home directory in the Unix
system to the WIN subdirectory on your disk in the A: drive in
your PC. Likewise, transfer unix1.doc & unix1.frm to the UNIX
subdirectory. This will be discussed in class.
4. Using WINDOWS NOTEPAD (accessories), create a text file in the
WIN
subdirectory called NAME.TXT.
Include the following text:
My name is <your name in cap's>.
I am enrolled in CGS 2060, Section <your section>.
Note:
Begin the text in row 1, column 5. There should be
two lines of text. Do not depress the <enter> key
after typing line 2.
5. Create a second text file in the WIN subdirectory called
CLASS.TXT.
Include the following text:
I am a <your class> and my major is <your major>.
Note:
Begin the text in row 1, column 5. There should be
one line of text. Do not depress the <enter) key after
typing this line.
6. Create a third text file in the WIN subdirectory called INFO.TXT.
Include the following text:
I <completed><did not complete> this assignment
in the computer lab.
Note:

7. Combine the three text files from steps 5-7 into one
text file, called STUDENT.TXT, in the WIN subdirectory.

8. Using WINDOWS NOTEPAD, create a batch file called TEST.BAT
in the WIN subdirectory. Use the COPY & PASTE procedure in
Windows to place the instructions below into that file.

9. Use <CTRL><PRT-SCRN> and then execute TEST.BAT at the DOS prompt.
The results displayed on the screen will be directed to the
printer.
10. Install a LUIS icon in your network group in Windows. Specific
instructions will be given in class. Click this icon to access
LUIS, the library system. At this point remember to type LUIS
<enter>. You are to find an author whose last name begins with
the same letter as yours. Note a title and its call number.
Email me in the required format the title, author, and the call
number.
11.
Refer to the email message with the subject, REGARDING UNIX
ASSIGNMENT. Submit to me via email comments as specified in
that message. Use the REPLY function.
12.
EXTRA CREDIT. Refer to the email message with the subject,
TOURBUS FOR ASSIGNMENT #2. Follow my instructions in that
message.
13. Edit the grade form (win1.frm) in pico and print it.
14. Copy your directories and files to your other two disks.
Backing up your work is very important. In the long run, it may
save you a lot of grief and lost time.
15. Check for viruses on your disks. Remember, if you submit a disk
with a virus, you will receive a zero for the assignment.
The following 7 printouts are to be submitted with a clipped disk in
a folder with "closed" pockets:

3. CLASS.TXT
4. INFO.TXT
5. STUDENT.TXT
6. TEST.BAT
7. Results of TEST.BAT

If you do the tourbus extra credit, additional printout(s) will be
required.
Items #8 (LUIS) and #9 (CRITIQUE) on the grade form should be
submitted
as email from Pine to me.
The grade form is the final word on what is to be submitted and
should
reflect what is listed in the above paragraphs. Each printed item
(#1
through #7 on the grade form) is to be placed in a closed pocket
folder
in the indicated sequential order. The item number, corresponding
to the grade form number, should be handwritten in the upper right
hand
corner of the printout. For the extra credit printout(s), handwrite
extra credit and place it/them as the last item in the folder.
