Technology: A graphing calculator (e.g. TI83) is recommended but not required. Graphing calculators which perform symbolic manipulations (e.g. TI89, TI92) will not be allowed for tests and quizzes. You may use ordinary scientific calculators, but no graphing calculators are allowed for quizzes or exams (including the Final) unless otherwise specified by the instructor. Attendance: is required; parts of this class may be in a cooperative learning format. You will be assigned group work in and out of class. Repeated absences (more than 4 unexcused) will result in lowering your grade in the course. Students absent for university sponsored events or must make arrangements for making up the work they will miss before they are absent. Homework: is required. Selected problems from your textbook will be assigned and graded. Late homework will not be accepted without a valid reason. It is the responsibility of the student to be aware of any changes General Education Outcomes: MAC 2311 is designed to satisfy the following criteria from the Central Student Outcomes of General Education: II D. 1. Students should be able to demonstrate general knowledge of the breadth, power, and development of major areas of mathematics. Calculus I introduces the concept of limit. This concept is used to define two important sets of functions: continuous functions and differentiable functions. These functions are then used to create mathematical models of real-world problems. We reach this goal by devoting most of the course to limits, continuity, and differentiation. Course lectures cover limits of algebraic and transcendental functions, optimization problems, and related-rates problems. These lectures also include the concepts needed to understand the topics, the skills needed to apply the concepts, and a discussion of the scope of these concepts. II. D. 2. Students should be able to demonstrate proficiency in solving problems using mathematical concepts and quantitative reasoning. We reach this goal by evaluating limits, translating word-problems into mathematical models, and calculating derivatives. The acquired techniques will be applied to graph functions, solve optimization problems, and solve related-rates problems.
