Reflecting – Noodles and Networking
Collegiality is a key element for success…
- for working at the department and college levels with colleagues
- for building strong teams
- for staying open and learning as you go
- for establishing and sustaining viable research agendas
- for making changes, tackling problems, and advancing knowledge
3
Reflecting – Noodles and Networking
The attributes of collegiality shared by Patterson and Johnson
are effective tools for many purposes.
- transparency
- specific, measurable goals
- clear, open, and respectful communication
- recognize and reward good work
- willingly engage in tasks leading to shared goals
Today, we will explore using these tools in two very different
contexts: at the individual level in carrying out research and at
the college level in addressing emerging demands and making
changes

Reflecting – Noodles and Networking at the
Individual Level
Collaboration and networking are a hallmark of today’s research
landscape. But which comes first – the networking or the
research agenda?
5
Reflecting – Noodles and Networking
• The answer is – it doesn’t matter where you start, it
matters THAT you start
• Networking to engage in research requires….
– Taking the time to articulate your interests and passion,
knowing what you have to offer and what you need
– Committing to doing the work it takes to initiate action by
crafting potential agendas that emerge from conversations,
shared purposes, and/or goals is a good place to start
– Learning about people/groups with similar interests and by
crossing traditional boundaries , communicating, welcoming
others, and building trust by engaging in each other’s efforts
is a great next step

Research Agenda
Networking
What is the problem(s) in which you
are interested?
Why is it important to address it?
What are key aspects?
What are important questions that
are unanswered?
How could you go about exploring
and/or addressing the problem?
What resources are needed?
Who can help fund all or part?
Who or which groups does the problem
impact?
Who might want to be included?
Who could help address the problem?
How might the questions be refined to
include multiple perspectives and/or
needs?
What could you and potential partners
bring to bear on the problem?
Are there ways to “tap” existing resources
to get started?
BRAINSTORM WAYS THAT
YOU CAN USE TO GET STARTED

Reflecting – Incoming Challenges as Dean
• Decreasing BBA and MBA enrollments
• Continuing decreases in state support, and need to
develop new revenue streams
• Acceptance of online and hybrid education as viable
delivery models, and where should Coggin compete
(most Coggin faculty only support face-to-face)
• Increased demand for experiential learning activities
(i.e., co-ops, internships, etc.)
8
Reflecting – Incoming Challenges as Dean
• Increased demand for international learning
experiences (i.e., study abroad, etc.)
• Low morale among faculty and staff
• Lack of strong and effective leadership
• Warnings regarding several faculty who create work
for others and slow down attempts to make changes
in the college (process vs results)
• No development staff for first 5 months
9
Refining – First Year as Dean
• Proposed two new graduate degree programs to
increase enrollment:
• - Master of Science in Management (MSM)
• - Master’s in Logistics & Supply Chain
Management (MLSCM)
• Advanced endowed professorship guidelines and
procedures document through college
10
Refining – First Year as Dean
• Initiated MBA Program curriculum review, and plan
to review curriculum of all programs in 2016-17
• 60+ meetings and/or site visits with corporate
partners in first year
• Rebuilding the Business Advisory Council (BAC)
• Hired 3 new tenure-track faculty, and kept or hired 7
visiting faculty needed for AACSB accreditation
11
Rejuvenating – Coggin’s Future is Bright
• Coggin’s future is bright in spite of SUS performance
metric and budget issues UNF faces in short-term
• Faculty are interested in creating Graduate School of
Business (possible major naming opportunity)
• Exploring several opportunities in entrepreneurship
space (internships and incubator/accelerator)
• New Director of Student Services starting 6/6/16
12
Rejuvenating – Coggin’s Future is Bright
• New space for CCB Student Services in August ‘16
• Expanded space for CCB Career Management Center
