Reflecting, Refining and Rejuvenating Mark Dawkins, Dean Coggin College of Business Cheryl Fountain, Professor Florida Institute of Education 1 Reflecting, Refining, and Rejuvenating Dr. Cheryl Fountain, Professor, FIE Dr. Mark Dawkins, Dean, CCB 2 Reflecting – Noodles and Networking Collegiality is a key element for success… - for working at the department and college levels with colleagues - for building strong teams - for staying open and learning as you go - for establishing and sustaining viable research agendas - for making changes, tackling problems, and advancing knowledge 3 Reflecting – Noodles and Networking The attributes of collegiality shared by Patterson and Johnson are effective tools for many purposes. - transparency - specific, measurable goals - clear, open, and respectful communication - recognize and reward good work - willingly engage in tasks leading to shared goals Today, we will explore using these tools in two very different contexts: at the individual level in carrying out research and at the college level in addressing emerging demands and making changes 4 Reflecting – Noodles and Networking at the Individual Level Collaboration and networking are a hallmark of today’s research landscape. But which comes first – the networking or the research agenda? 5 Reflecting – Noodles and Networking • The answer is – it doesn’t matter where you start, it matters THAT you start • Networking to engage in research requires…. – Taking the time to articulate your interests and passion, knowing what you have to offer and what you need – Committing to doing the work it takes to initiate action by crafting potential agendas that emerge from conversations, shared purposes, and/or goals is a good place to start – Learning about people/groups with similar interests and by crossing traditional boundaries , communicating, welcoming others, and building trust by engaging in each other’s efforts is a great next step 6 Reflecting – Noodles and Networking Research Agenda Networking What is the problem(s) in which you are interested? Why is it important to address it? What are key aspects? What are important questions that are unanswered? How could you go about exploring and/or addressing the problem? What resources are needed? Who can help fund all or part? Who or which groups does the problem impact? Who might want to be included? Who could help address the problem? How might the questions be refined to include multiple perspectives and/or needs? What could you and potential partners bring to bear on the problem? Are there ways to “tap” existing resources to get started?
