Nancy Soderberg opened the meeting at 3:05pm.
I. Capitol Steps event
Guest Carl Holman, Assistant Director of the Fine Arts Center, informed the group about
the specifics of the Capitol Steps event on September 25. He reported that there would
be a patriotic pre-jamboree with food, music, and voter registration tables. The ADP was
offered a table to give out info. Chris Arsenault volunteered to occupy this table and give
out fliers for upcoming ADP events. It was determined that Martina Perry would prepare
the handouts. There was discussion about the educational benefit of this event, and it
was determined that because it brings about awareness, it fulfills the mission of the
ADP.
II. Request for Sponsorship of Documentary
David Jaffee reported that WJCT will be showing Evoking Rights, a documentary
featuring various UNF personalities discussing what “rights” means to them. He
reported that Dr. Jillian Smith had requested sponsorship of the UNF ADP; the group
determined that they would support this.
III. New Student Government Representative Coordination
Nancy Soderberg welcomed the new student government ADP representatives, Anthony
Mack and Chris Arsenault. She explained the functions of the ADP and asked for their
active participation in gaining student interest in ADP initiatives.
IV. Upcoming Fall Events
Martina Perry gave updates on Constitution Week, Project Vote Smart, Face-to-Face
with Former Senator Bob Graham, and John Parmelee’s presentation on candidate
framing.
Heather Patterson gave an update on the Elections Debate. She reported that the
debate has been moved from the green to the Robinson Theatre. Patterson said she
was trying to arrange for John Delaney to moderate. Co-lead on this project, Matt
Corrigan, said he was working to find representatives from each campaign to debate. It
was determined that the Republican and Democratic Party headquarters would
determine whom to send as representatives for this.
Martina Perry reported that a topic had not yet been selected for the October UNF
Voices Forum. Various student groups were coordinating this event.
It was determined that Jason Mauro and Martina Perry would create promotional
materials featuring the ADP logo for the Flight from Death film and panel.
V. Additional Events Discussion
There was discussion on legal issues pertaining to driving students to polls to vote. It
was determined that the ADP would not participate in this activity, in an effort to remain
non-partisan.
David Jaffee reported that he would try to find participants for a debate on Amendment
2, and report back to the committee at a later date.
Nancy Soderberg reported on World Affairs Council programs. It was determined that
the ADP would promote student participation in all World Affairs Council initiatives that
relate to the ADP’s mission.
It was determined that the Florida Times-Union and City Hall tours would be postponed
until the spring or summer.
Meeting adjourned.
