Government Oversight Committee Meeting Minutes

Chair: Gustavo Ascanio

November 2nd, 2015

6:00PM to 7:00PM in the John E. Sapp

I. Call to Order a. Meeting called to order at 6:01PM.

II. Roll Call - Vice Chair Thames a. Quorum has been established with 5 voting members; Akapabio, Lee, Thames,

Sorrentino, Johnson.

III. Approval of the Minutes a. Senator Lee: Motion to approve the minutes from October 5, 2015. Second. All in favor. Moved.

IV. Approval of the Agenda a. Senator Thames: Motion to approve the agenda for November 2, 2015. Second.

All in favor. Moved.

V. Student Remarks - None

VI. Guest Speakers a. Victoria Shore: Robert’s Rules are established to ensure that meetings run smoothly and orderly while also allowing everyone to speak. Only one amendment can be made to a previously made amendment. It is important questions and comments are concise and on topic.

1. Senator Akapabio: If the amendment to the amendment is approved it becomes the main motion? - Correct.

2. Senator Akapabio: Once it becomes the main motion, can it be amended again? - No.

3. Senator Thames: Can a motion be rescinded after it's been passed? -

From my understanding right now, no, but I will get back with you.

4. Senator Thames: Is discussion on the amendment to the amendment or all of it? - It is all in the same discussion period.

5. Senator Sorrentino: What happens if someone brings up an irrelevant point? - The chair says that they are out of order.

6. Senator Thames: Are senators allowed to offer points of information? -

VII. New Business

Yes a. Senate Appointments

1. David Holbrook Platts a) I am a junior majoring in music with a minor economics. I am looking to get more involved in UNF at a more professional capacity.

(1) Senator Thames: Do you have anything in your schedule that would conflict with student government? - No

(2) Senator Lee: Do you believe that your workload with your major conflict with your involvement? - No, I manage my time very well.

(3) Senator Sorrentino: Are you involved with any other organizations on campus? - Yes, I am the treasurer of the

United Way student organization, I am also in a jazz combo.

(4) Senator Johnson: Are there any particular initiatives you would like to push forward? - I would like to voice my opinion on bus routes and transportation in general

(5) Senator Sorrentino: What committee would you want to be a part of? - Budget and Allocations

(6) Senator Thames: Do you know where our student government funding comes from? - Students pay fees in their tuition

(7) Are you familiar with Sunshine law or could you explain it?

- No

(8) Senator Thames: POI one of the parts of it that you signed says that you will not talk to other senators or voting members on pending legislation.

(9) Senator Thames: Motion to forward David Holbrook Platts to Senate for confirmation. Second. Discussion. Roll call vote passes 5-0-0.

VIII. Announcements a. Please make sure everyone is on time for senate next week and all students seeking appointment stay for their appropriate meetings after this one. USA
