Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 12:20 p.m.
Approval of Minutes: The minutes of the October 2, 2015 meeting were approved with the
following changes. The Personnel Committee did submit a report since it was emailed to Sue
Syverud and change John’s event to Confucius Institute’s event.
Announcements:
Dr. Weber sent a camp composition email to faculty. It is a writing camp to help students in
grades 4-11 earn higher FSA English Language Arts – Writing scores and also acquire stronger
lifelong writing skills. Scholarships are available for students in Title 1 Schools and/or receiving
free or reduced lunches so please help spread the word.
Dr. Weber is on the Academic Standards Committee and she said they’ve made a
recommendation that all faculty get an email letting them know when a student withdrawals from
their class. Dr. Weber will let you know when this will be initiated.
Sue Syverud reminded faculty that Porchfest is this Saturday in Springfield and we’d like to
celebrate this as a college so please join us. Sherry Shaw explained the event and Sue Syverud
will forward Sherry Shaw’s address.
Jen Kane gave an update on the Faculty Support Grants. The deadline was last Friday. We
received six applications and they have been distributed to chairs that will be doing the review.
There are (2) $1,500 awards and we will let individuals know who received the award on
November 20th. The Faculty International Travel Support Grant deadline is November 16, 2015
so you still have time to apply. The larger foundation grant had four or five COEHS applications
submitted.
Bess Wilson placed a flyer in the back for Parenting Gifted Children event that will be held on
Sunday, November 8 from 2 – 3 p.m. at the Southeast Branch of Jacksonville’s Public Library.
If you know of any parents that would be interested, we would love to have them participate.
Soonhyang Kim said there will be a call for proposals next week for the 4th UI International
Research conference held on June 24-26, 2016 in Jacksonville, Florida.
Liz Gregg said the 7th Annual Student Leadership Summit sponsored by the Taylor Leadership
Institute is next Friday, November 13 from 9:00 -12:30 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom.
Please encourage your students to go. It has an online registration which includes a free lunch.
Dean’s Search Update: Nick Eastham posted the position announcement on our college
webpage. The candidate CV’s will be uploaded here during the interview time period. Thirtyfour candidates have applied so far and the committee meets this Thursday, November 12 to
review applications.
Bylaws: In Article 10 Section 1 all of the committees for our college are listed but omitted from
this section is the Technology Committee so a motion was made to add it to Section 1. The
change was approved.
Standing Committees:
Executive Committee – Sue Syverud requests that you send standing committee minutes to Sue
Syverud and cc: Deirdre Meehan. If you’d like something discussed at Executive Committee put
it in the email. The goal is to put them on the O drive.
Undergraduate Standards and Curriculum Committee – no report.
Graduate Standards and Curriculum Committee – no report.
Student Issues Committee – Bess Wilson said the committee has finished the report from last
year’s student issues survey and copies are in the back or you can email Bess Wilson for a copy.
Personnel Committee – Sue Syverud said clarity is needed for the University Selection
Committees for both the Outstanding Undergraduate and Graduate Teaching Awards. The
Bylaws say for the Personnel Committee to forward the names to the dean but Faculty
Association wants them sent from previous winners but if a previous winner isn’t on the
Personnel Committee then we have a conflict. We have to do this at the first Faculty Assembly
meeting or we have to have a previous winner on the Personnel Committee. It was agreed to
hold an election at the first Faculty Assembly meeting. It needs to go to the Executive
Committee and Deirdre Meehan will put a reminder on her calendar to make sure the Executive
Committee puts it on the first agenda.
Technology Committee – Laura Jackson said the committee met on October 29. They are
working on a faculty technology usage survey. Three of our professors were chosen to present
on different topics for the UNF Technology Innovations Symposium: Matt Ohlson, Suzanne
Ehrlich and Laura Jackson. Jen Kane, Liz Gregg and Jason Lee had a poster there as well.
Long Range Planning Committee – Kim Cheek said the committee is working to revise the
IMPACT statement. Faculty have been asked for feedback and the committee will be meeting
after Faculty Assembly to review that feedback.
Dean’s Report:
Updates: science and math education initiatives: Marsha Lupi wants to focus on recruiting
science and math education majors. We plan to bring as many stakeholders together as possible
to create a model to seek funding for supporting these undergraduates. We need to encourage
enrollment in these fields.
FTCE workshop updates: The workshops are going well. Thanks to Cathy O’Farrell, Kelly Scott
and Megan Possinger. They’ve had four sessions of social studies, language arts, science and
math with lots of positive feedback and they’ve been very well attended.
A lot of students aren’t passing - this is a crisis. We will keep putting in the budget for recurring
monies for this but we might have to start charging for the workshops. Sixty percent of our
students are not graduating and we get penalized if they don’t graduate within six years. Passing
the test is a Florida requirement. A discussion ensued and it was agreed that we need a multifaceted approach to deal with this.
Shut Up and Write: Jen Kane said the writing group will meet from 10 – 12 every Friday in the
model classroom and all are welcome. Jen will send out reminders. The group will write in 25
minute increments which is a good format to be productive. Jen Kane will send out an online
version of this as well.
Department Shoutouts: Matt Ohlson said the doctoral program is starting a cross cohort
partnership where experienced doctoral students serve as mentors. They meet once a month to
share best practices and support.
John Kemppainen added that he had two alums join him in Tallahassee for the Florida Fund for
Minority Teachers meeting. The next day they met legislators that were very interested in asking
our students about the Florida Fund for Minority Teachers’ scholarship. Our students were
fantastic and handled the questions beautifully.
