Funding Available to Support Student-Centred Activities at CMCI - 2015/16
Introduction
This document sets out the funding available to support student-centred activities at
CMCI this year, as well as an overview of the mechanisms being put in place for their
allocation. At the heart of the Department’s plans for support are the following
activities: i) CMCI Society Events (N.B. all MA and PhD students in the Department
are automatically members of the Society); ii) Research Group Events (N.B. for MA
CCI students only); iii) International CMCI Postgraduate Research Conference; iv)
Asian CCI Society events; and v) Equalities and Diversity Fund. Additionally, the
Department is always open to hearing about other ideas that don’t fit in to any of
these schemes.
CMCI Society (all MA and PhD students)
The Department has set aside £800 for Society events in 2015/16. MA and PhD
student representatives will form the Society steering committee and this committee
will host society events, for example ‘end-of semester party’. The Society steering
committee will meet at the middle of each semester.
MA Research and Cultural Events (membership open to all MA students)
The Department is enthusiastic to support MA students’ research and cultural
activities. A group or team of students (minimum 7 students), who want to organise a
research activity, cultural event or innovative event related to their MA study, can
apply for a grant between £50 and £200. The funding decision will be made based on
the quality of the student group’s proposal and the proposed event’s engagement with
the broader MA and CMCI communities. A budget of £1,600 has been set-aside for
this purpose.
International CMCI Postgraduate Research Conference (open to PhD students)
Following the success of the PhD Conference in 2014 and 2015, PhD students are
encouraged to work towards an international student conference, to be held in early
summer 2015. The Department allocates £1,500 to support this. PhD students are also
being offered some assistance in funding attendance at conferences (where they are
giving papers). A budget of £2,000 has been set-aside for this purpose.
Asian CCI society (open to all MA and PhD students)
The department will provide £800 to Asian CCI society activities. The society will be
launched in Semester 1 to promote an understanding cultural and creative industries
and policies in Asian societies. Its main focus will be organising research and
networking events.
Equalities and Diversity Fund (open to all MA and PhD students)
Following the success of the CMCI Diversity projects led by Dr Melissa Nisbett
(2014) and Jonathan Stoddart (2015), the Department will also be making up to
£2,000 available for students wishing to undertake a research project or action
research that explores inequalities, or generates better equality and diversity in the
Department. This needs to be a collaborative project involving MA, PhD and staff
members in some capacity. The money awarded (probably to one or two projects) can
be used to pay the researchers/co-researchers. An example would be where students
1
carry out interviews with other students on the Department’s courses, supervised by a
PhD student with a member of Staff, in order to explore how we can develop our
curricula and teaching approaches better to meet the needs of a culturally diverse
student body.
