MUSIC 10 ORIENTATION VIDEO
Greetings and welcome to Music 10 OL – Music
Appreciation. I am Susan Bruckner and I will be the
instructor for this course. This Orientation video is
mandatory. Please email me to confirm that you have
watched it before starting the course.
PURCHASING THE COURSE: You will need to purchase
OnMusic Appreciation Standard ed. either in the
Cabrillo College Bookstore or online at
store.connect4education.com. It is approximately $110
for the course materials. You will need to enroll on the
Cabrillo Canvas site to verify your enrollment in the
course. You will then access everything via the website
for connect4education.com Be sure to purchase the
Standard edition. It’s the first one listed at the site
above. There are hundreds of musical pieces that you
can download onto your mp3 player at the conclusion of
the course if you wish.
When you purchase the course you will receive an
access code. The course is in a streaming format online
so you will not be receiving any physical book or
recording. It is all online. You will use your access code
to enter the course. Follow the instructions for
registration at connect4education. As I said already you
must also register through the Canvas shell at Cabrillo
for Mus 10 for ID purposes only.
DEADLINES: There are suggested weekly deadlines for
each assignment built into the course listed on the
homepage next to each one. I will be posting 3 strict
deadlines on the Announcement Board on the
homepage so it is very important to check that
regularly. Don’t rely on email reminders. These
deadlines are not posted on the Canvas page, only on
the c4e course itself. I strongly recommend you set
aside a weekly time for the course and stay disciplined
so you do not fall behind in the work. This course ends
before finals week at Cabrillo, so be sure to check all
deadlines on the homepage.
You MUST complete all 5 written assignments in order
to pass the course even with a high GPA otherwise. If
one of the 5 is missing you will not pass the course, NO
EXCEPTIONS! Each assignment is weighted and those
percentages are also on the homepage for each one.
Discussion groups are 6% of the final grade and are an
easy way to boost your GPA. Written assignment #5
requires you to attend a symphony orchestra concert so
plan ahead for that by checking websites of Santa Cruz
Symphony, SF Symphony, Symphony Silicon Valley, or
Monterey Symphony if you live locally. SC Symphony
offers $10 student rush tickets before each concert.
COMMUNICATION: I will communicate with you by
posting announcements on the homepage. Be sure to
read them! You may contact me by email at
subruckn@cabrillo.edu.
I also give written feedback on every written
assignment so please take time to read it to get the most
out of the class. I also give 2nd chances on some
assignments if I feel that you misunderstood that
assignment. If you want to take advantage of the 2nd
chance you must submit the paper at least one week
ahead of the deadline.
CHEATING: Cabrillo College policy states zero tolerance
for cheating or plagiarizing, such as cutting & pasting
from Wikipedia. Please work on your own!! The college
will give an automatic drop and a ‘W’ grade if before
withdrawal period. If after, an automatic ‘F’ is given. Do
not turn in papers that look suspiciously like another
student’s or that is written in a different writing style
from your other work. I have had this happen and the
outcome was not positive. Read the source material and
write in YOUR OWN WORDS. Please use spellcheck and
grammar check and read your paper before submitting
using the best writing skills possible. If you want to
improve your writing skills, visit the ACS center on
campus behind the library. It’s a free service and a
perfect way to improve this valuable communication
skill.
CONTACT INFO: If you have any questions at any time
feel free to email me at my Cabrillo email:
subruckn@cabrillo.edu
My office phone is 479-6444 – or visit my office during
office hours posted on my Cabrillo website. I’m in room

OK, now that you are almost done with the Orientation
you need to email me & state the following ‘secret
sentence’: “I understand I need to submit all 5 written
assignments in order to pass the course.” This will let
me know that you’ve gotten to the end of the
Orientation video & you’re ready to begin the course!
Good luck in the course, and I look forward to exploring
some of the world’s greatest music together with you!
