5. Justification (must cite accreditation and/or assessment by the graduate faculty) for new course or course revision or course renumbering:

The NC Department of Public Instruction has called for the revisioning of Master of

School Administration (MSA) programs to align with new state standards for the preparation of school leaders. UNC GA has instituted a parallel process for the reauthorization of MSA programs. The new North Carolina School Executive Standards emphasize that candidates for licensure must demonstrate an understanding of theory and research related to leadership and strategic planning within a 21 st

century school context.

During their pre-service training, MSA students must demonstrate this understanding by working with stakeholders in the field to help solve problems of practice. Service

Leadership Projects (SLPs) will provide MSA students with the context they need to practice and refine their problem-solving and interpersonal skill development. The

Graduate faculty of Educational Leadership determined that a new course would best address this theme and demonstrate “proficiency” in all required areas of the new North

Carolina School Executive Standards: Pre-service Candidates Standards 1a1, 1a2, 1c1,

Students will work in a school setting with a principal, assistant principal, and other stakeholders to determine and address areas of need. Students will maintain a portfolio of artifacts (i.e. action plan, survey findings, etc.) to serve as evidence of their satisfactory participation in the SLP. The student’s portfolio will also include an impact summary---a written journal describing, evaluating, and reflecting on the SLP experiences.
