Provides leadership for the Division of Student Life during the absence of the Vice Chancellor.
The Vice Chancellor for Student Life delegates authority to the Associate Vice Chancellor for
Student Life to act on his behalf during periods when the Vice Chancellor is absent from campus.
Acts as a spokesperson on behalf of the Vice Chancellor. In this role, the Associate Vice
Chancellor:
Meets with students and responds to student inquiries on behalf of the Vice Chancellor.
Participates in various Student Life committees as related to student development related topics;
i.e., Healthy Lifestyles, Chancellor’s Committee on the Status of Women, Appeals Committee,
and Policy Review and Implementation Subcommittee of ECU’s Alcohol and Other Drug
initiative.
Oversees Counseling Services, Mental Health Services, Student Health Services, Disability
Support Services, Career Services, Student Neighborhood Relations, Student Success, Victim
Advocate and Parent Services. Provides colleagues with current, relevant, and time-sensitive
literature, media tools and professional resources on student development theory that will further
their ability to reach the needs of diverse student population. Assist students in their
developmental progress as individuals by providing appropriate outreach programs and
interventions. Identify specific retention issues related to students' success in college. Develop
new program initiatives that meet the psychological developmental needs of all students at East
Carolina University. Evaluate the current programs being offered for students that address the
psychosocial developmental needs of students. Identify potential partnerships with offices within
student life and academic affairs that will assist students in the transition to ECU, as well as
progression through their collegiate years and beyond. Enhance visibility and viability of the
services offered for students in counseling, health, disability, student neighborhood relations,
career services, student success, parent services, victim advocate and other student development
units. Offer current staff within the unit the opportunity to gain professional development through
on-campus and off-campus training, conference attendance and resource/skill development
opportunities. Evaluate the performance of individual professional staff members. Lead staff in
establishing procedures for evaluating the quality of their work and for providing them feedback
concerning their performance and means of improving.
Grant exceptions for late coarse drops, late withdrawals and retroactive withdrawals. In addition,
grant exceptions to Parental Notification Policy.
