Renumbering of an Existing Course

Justification for new course or course revision or renumbering:
In assessing the illustration concentration, a need is seen for a survey level course in the
illustration concentration to parallel the graphic design and photography concentrations.
Additional assessments by successful alumni working in the field suggest greater
accessibility and expansion of the program. Moving the introductory illustration course to the
sophomore/survey level would be the first step in that positive direction.

______________________________________________________________________________________
Course Objectives: The course is an introduction to illustration as a communicative medium with an
emphasis on media and techniques. Goals are: to expose students to a variety of media and assist them in
developing a level of skill in using them, to continue to develop conceptualizing abilities (most illustration
projects require researching subject matter and doing lots of work-up sketches) and to expose students to
illustration, past and present, the current trends, the leading people. There will be four major graded
projects and a fifth grade based on performance on exercises, the report on an illustrator, media studies,
and class participation. Project work-up, research and progressive sketches are as important as the final
piece of work. Formal critiques involve student discussion and are intended to assist in meeting the oral
communication competencies required by the University. The five grades will count equally and will be
averaged together for the final grade. (Detailed explanations of projects are given in class). Due dates are
tentative and subject to change.

______________________________________________________________________________________
Attendance: Mandatory. Up to 3 absences excused. Beyond 3, valid excuses will be the only accepted
ones (sickness, death in family). Critiques are important not to miss. If work is late, if you miss class for no
valid reason, the project due drops one letter grade on that day and is lowered one letter each day
thereafter (plus/minus will be used for project grades). You may rework and redo projects at any time during
the semester for a possible change in grade.
