On The Board:
Definitions for Newspaper Terms: Folio, Headline, Byline, Lead, Statement, Details,
Background, and Two types of Articles: News and Feature.
An ACTIVE reader asks questions.
Lesson
1. First look at the pictures and the captions.
2. Next, the first question for the ACTIVE reader with a newspaper is, “What
happened?”
3. Read the headline and the first few paragraphs.
4. Now ask, “What did I just read?” (TELLBACK)
5. Now ask, “What should I expect to find in this article?” taking a guess as to what
the content is forces you to activate your mind, it turns on the thinking process,
which automatically increases comprehension and retention (memory).
6. Read all the Headlines like this.
7. Notice the notes that indicate where an article continues: another page?, another
page in another section?
8. Explore the other sections.
