“The Birthmark”
In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Birth-Mark, we are introduced to Aylmer, who is obsessed with his wife’s
birthmark. He sees his wife as perfect except for the birthmark on her face, so he attempts to eradicate it.
Prompt: In a carefully constructed essay, compare Aylmer’s attempts to cure his wife’s deformity with
popular culture’s fascination with plastic surgery today. Write a paper that discusses ethics and the
obsession with physical appearance in both Hawthorne’s work and in contemporary society.

and the author’s writing technique. What might be considered interesting, unusual, or important?
2. Brainstorm a list of potential topics. Take notes on important passages in the text. When writing the paper, these notes
