SPRING 2015 SLO/PLO ASSESSMENT REPORT Date: June 26, 2015 Name of Person Reporting: Vilma Bernal Name of Department and/or Discipline: Business and Law Department 1. a. List the courses/certificates/programs your discipline/department assessed in the Spring 2015 semester. We completed several assessments in the spring 2015 semester based on the three year cycle: Accounting 1 (69% average) Business 1 (73% average) Business 5 (76%) Management 2 (74%) Management 13 (73% and 72%) Management 31 (93%) Marketing 21 (80%) b. For each one, indicate whether the benchmark (standard for student success) was reached. The benchmark of 70% was met or exceeded in all assessments, except for one Accounting 1 class which resulted in a 53% average score. 2. Summarize the major assessment results for courses/programs in your area. We were pleased with the assessment results from all SLOs. All assessments met or exceeded the 70% benchmark except for one class in accounting one. SLO’s The SLO assessment results demonstrated that students were successful when they take full participation in the class, including participation (in-class or on-line), class attendance, group work, completed assignments and taken all required tests. The opposite is of course noticeable as well, when students do not fully participate, then their grades are negatively affected. 3. Summarize what changes have been made or are planned to be made as a result of the assessments. Projected changes included the following strategies: Three courses were assessed accounting one (two different teachers) and both agree that some changes must be done in curriculum so as to place more emphasis in the area of “financial statements” Spending more time explaining assignments and rubrics to ensure that students are clear about the grading expectations Including additional internet, real-life examples and practice Using rubrics for self-evaluation purposes before submitting assignments 4. Follow up on previous assessments: (1) If an SLO was assessed previously, compare the results with the earlier assessments: (a) Have the recommended changes been implemented? Several of our SLO’s have been assessed previously, and faculty report increased success rates. Many of the strategies that were implemented include: (b) Spending more time in a particular topic so as to ascertain understanding from students. (c) Provide test or tools to re-inforce learning. (d) Reinforce rubric and discuss rubric in class so students understand the assignment at hand. (2) How have the findings led to improved student learning? Faculty reports higher degrees of success by focusing on rubrics, spending more time on certain fundamental topics, creative tools to test understanding, and providing increased levels of feedback on assignments. 5. Have the results of your assessments been shared and discussed among the members of your program? (Provide dates and any minutes of meetings as evidence. Please also post relevant minutes in the Department Notes section of the SLO Online system.)
