Los Angeles Mission College Academic Senate – Viability Request for Discontinuance In general, program discontinuance (termination) should be recommended only after a serious attempt has been made to improve program effectiveness and efficiency, unless it is clear that future efforts at remediation are not warranted. Each program/major represents a structured array of courses designed to prepare the student to attain a body of knowledge that leads to attainment of a job, paves the way for career advancement, or prepares him or her for further study at the baccalaureate level, therefore careful consideration should be given to the impact that program termination may have on the students, faculty, staff and campus. Every dimension of the decision to discontinue a program or major should be addressed so the College is fully informed about the significance of such a decision. Pursuant to Title 5, CCR, 51022(a) and LACCD Board Rule 6803.10, “…each college shall, in consultation with the Academic Senate, develop procedures for initiating and conducting a viability review of ‘educational programs’…”. Therefore, a viability review is required prior to program discontinuance. Viability review for discontinuance may be initiated by a written request to the Academic Senate President by any of the following: College President; Vice President of Academic Affairs; Curriculum Committee Chair; Educational Planning Committee (EPC) voting member; and/or Academic Senate voting member. The Request for Discontinuance form shall be completed with supporting documentation (i.e. relevant data, Program Review information, etc), for submission to the Chair of the LAMC Curriculum Committee (Curriculum@lamission.edu) and a copy forwarded to the Academic Senate President and the Vice President of Academic Affairs.
