Presentations and panel discussion/question/answers Green Building On Campus. Bill Retzlaff Kelly Luckett Biological Sciences Internationally, the emphasis on environmentally friendly building practices has been rising exponentially. In the United States, the U.S. Green Building Council has taken the lead to promote sustainable building practices. While “green” building is widely popular in the press and has spurred much interest among lawmakers, the private sector has been slow to embrace the concept. Another arena in which green building practices have emerged is in the university sector – an area which could become a leader in the green building movement. Building green on campus has the possible financial benefit of reducing long-term energy consumption, is a “sustainable practice” embraced by faculty, staff, and students, and has the added benefit of raising the public image of the university. However, trade-offs including high up-front construction costs have many campus administrators hesitant at initiating green building efforts. Our panel will present green building ideas and discuss the pros and cons of green building on the university campus. Panel Members: Dr. Bill Retzlaff – G.R.E.E.N.
