The Evolution of Minority Groups in US Politics Anne Flaherty Description: The role of minority groups in American politics has changed dramatically over time. This project presents the political evolution of each of four main minority groups in the US, African Americans, American Indians, Latinos, and Asian Americans. Each of these groups (and often the various subgroups within them) has undergone their own distinct political evolutions. We cover the historical context of each group, the policy trends that have taken place over time, and offer an overview of each groups’ present political power base and political issues. Presenters: Dr Anne F B Flaherty (project coordinator), Holly Allen, Annie Hogan, Adam King, Suzanne Kirichkow, Matthew Nelson, Cassaundra Sampson, and Tammy Wright. Suggested format: Our project will be best presented as a group of poster presentations, each one addressing the particular dynamics of one of the four main groups listed above. Suggested timing: Our project comes out of a course on Racial and Ethnic Politics which meets on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 9 am. A time on Wednesday morning would therefore be desirable in order to maximize the students’ abilities to be present.
