[Celebrating the 11th College Green Week]
‘Trinity’s Green Gathering’
Monday 18th February

1.15 pm: Launch of Green Week.
ALL WELCOME. Exam Hall steps (if fine)/Exam Hall (if wet).
Guests will include Senator David Norris, the Provost and the COO.

The proceeds from the College print cartridge recycling scheme will be presented to
Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children. It went really well.

Details of Student Society Competition revealed – Sponsored by KMK.

12.50 – 1.50 pm: Cycling Skills Workshop: Sports Centre (Ancillary hall -1st floor).
Bookings - Sports Centre reception desk (01 896 1812). Instructors (Mike McKillen
& Damien O’ Tuama) - qualified cycling instructors.
The launch will feature a raffle for a voucher for a bike (be there to get your free
ticket) and ‘spot prizes’ for the ‘Best Dressed Green male & female’.(Ball tickets)

3.00- 4.00 pm: Green Campus External Assessment. Science Gallery, Paccar
Theatre. All welcome.
Tuesday 19th February

12.00-2.00 pm: Coin Collecting Competition: St Vincent de Paul Society, Arts
Building. Bring in your unwanted coins any day during the Green Week between 12
and 2 pm and win a Ball ticket. Went well, approximately 50 kg of coins were
collected.

12.00- 3.00 pm: Green Fair in Arts Building Concourse (EnviroSoc):
Information on ethically produced goods, services and products for sustainable
living. Supported by KMK, Greyhound Recycling, An Taisce, Young friends of the
earth, Environment Society, Trinity Let’s Grow Group, VOICE – Voice of Irish
concern for the Environment, Coast Watch Ireland, TCBR – Trinity Centre for
Biodiversity Research. It was on a bad location. We have to make sure we will have
the first floor area booked for the fair next year.

Contact the Frisbee Club again next year.

1.00-2.00 pm: "Trinity College Alternative Campus Tour - Nature, Technology
& Architecture" from house 6 (Front Square). Tourists, campus visitors and
students and anybody who want to know more about Trinity's sustainability are
more than welcome to come. Good footwear is recommended! Should be advertised
better in 2014.

6.30 pm: Simon Perry Sustainability Symposium 2013 - “Making Green
Campuses GREEN”. Paccar Theatre, Science Gallery.
Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the founding of the TCD Green Campus
Committee. This event will cover how universities can be used as “living
laboratories” to teach students life skills through participation in the college setting
and how chartered engineers design this infrastructure.
The speakers will include: Comedian Abie Bowman, Kingspan Divisional
Marketing Manager, Louise Foody, An Taisce Green-Campus Programme, Deirdre
O'Carroll, Grangegorman Development Agency, Paul Dunne, Engineers Ireland Young Engineers Society . Went really well.
Wednesday 20th February
‘SMARTER TRAVEL DAY’ We have to put more work into it
next year.
Free Tea & Coffee – Dining Hall Steps from 8.30 am.
Free ‘Stretch and Flexibility Class’ in the Sports centre from 8.00 - 8.30 am.
The ‘Spokesman’ will be on Campus to solve any technical problems.


1.00-2.00 pm: ‘Bicycle Fashion Show`: Participants will bring their own bicycles
and with their bike and their clothing they will represent different age and
different styles. The parade will take place at the Front Square. (Prizes 2 Ball
tickets). Went really well. Next year we have to advertise it in advance (posters on
noticeboards, emails,etc.).

Photographic Exhibition - DUPA.
Percy French Nature Photography Competition
Theme : ‘Nature on Campus’. Submit up to five images by email
to dupa@csc.tcd.ie with "Percy French" in the subject line. Submissions will be taken
up until 18.00 Wednesday 20th February, then they will be put up on facebook and
judged by DUPA committee (and any members of the Green Team if interested).
Winner will be announced Friday 22nd. Best entries will be published on DUPA
website and the best image will be featured by University Times. (Prize 1 Ball ticket)

6.00-7.30 pm: ‘Biodiversity Bingo’, Pavilion Bar, Shane Kevin McGuinness
(Trinity Centre for Biodiversity Research), Pavillion Bar. Individuals receive a
game card with pictures of common species of tree, bird, mammal and insect found
around the college and we show them similar pictures on a slideshow. The game
then works in the same way as common bingo. Prizes for the winner of each row,
square and card., including potted plants, biodiversity guides to Ireland and other
spot prizes. Free entry. Went very well.

Modern Languages Society, their event should be promoted next year.
Thursday 21st February

9.30 am : Special Breakfast for Housekeeping Staff (Invitation only) sponsored by Greyhound Recycling the College’s waste contractor.

12.00 noon : “Veteran Trees-a nuisance or treasure” Geography Lecture Theatre,
Gerry Douglas, Teagasc. Went well.


1.00-2.00 pm: Tree Walk, led by Mr David Hackett, Grounds Supervisor. See
Trinity’s special trees under the guidance of an expert. Starting from the Campanile.
Went well.

2 .00- 4.00: Atrium - Community Garden Workshop (Envirosoc and the Botany
Society). Learn from the ‘experts’ - how to grow your own vegetables and flowers in
small containers. Let’s grow group can do it next year.

12.00 – 4.00 pm SU and V de P ‘Clothes Drive’ - Arts Building. Bring all your
unwanted clothes, shoes, school bags and ruck-sacks.

4.00 pm: 'Paper on Baby Licenses and Planning For a Green Future' discussion,
Philosophical Society, Phil Conversation Room in the GMB, the speaker is Oisin
Brogan.

6.00 - 8.00 pm: Envirosoc present ‘Panel Discussion: Food Politics!! Paccar
Theatre, Science Gallery. Speakers include. Went well.
Friday 22nd February

12.00 noon (coffee 11.30 am): "21st Century Zoo - Conservation and Modern
Zoo Keeping" Botany Lecture Theatre, Rachel O’Sullivan, Dublin Zoo. Went well.

12.00-2.00 pm: Coin Collecting Competition: St Vincent de Paul Society, Arts
Building. Bring in your unwanted coins any day during the Green Week between 12
and 2 pm and win a Ball ticket. Coin weighing at 2 pm.

1.00-2.00 pm: Bird Walk led by Mr Aidan Kelly, Physiology Dept. Starting at the
Campanile. See Trinity’s beautiful bird-life with the help of an expert. Bring field
glasses or binoculars if possible - a small number will be available. Went well.

5.30 pm: Pavilion Bar - Pub quiz, (Engineering Society) – Sponsored by
Kingspan – Great Prizes for the winners. Went well.
All Week

College Library. Our Early Printed Books department will provide historical
books for display in the Berkeley Library foyer and selected material from our
Environmental Science collections will be on display in the Hamilton Library. Videos
promoting material from our modern environmental science collection will run on
our information screens in the Library buildings. Each day during Green Week, our
blog will feature individual books from these selections.

Sports Centre – Monday 18th, Wednesday 20th and Friday 22nd February from 8.00
am to 8.30 am free ‘stretch & flexibility classes’ will be offered to ‘bikers/walkers’
availing of the ‘active commute showers’ in the Sports centre and those participating
in the ‘Alternative Transport Day on Wednesday the 20th February . We’re running
cycle safety training on Monday 18th Feb for people who are a bit leery about cycling
in town.

Catering: ‘Go Green and Eat Green’ - Special menus Monday, Tuesday and
Wednesday in all catering outlets on Campus. Buy a Trinity Travel mug any day
during the Green Week on special offer with your first coffee free. Travel mugs were
very popular.

KMK: recycle all your electrical waste in special trolleys/bins placed around College.
Free domestic Battery Recycling Boxes available at Green Week Events throughout
the week.

Student Society Competition sponsored by KMK (College’s WEEE Recycling
Contractor). Details of the competition will be revealed at the Launch on Monday the
18th February at the Exam Hall at 1.15 pm. Substantial cash prizes for the winners.

Bike to Work Initiative: The College launched this year’s Bicycle Tax Saver Scheme
at the end of January. For further information on the scheme please follow this link

Staff who are interested in availing of the scheme please note the closing date for
applications is 5pm Friday 22nd February 2013. Please direct all queries to
staff.relations@tcd.ie Staff who cycle to work but who are not members of The
Sports Centre can avail of free use of showers and changing facilities. Some
restrictions apply. Register at sport@tcd.ie.

Energy Competition – Win a Domestic Energy Meter when you answer the
following question - “Which College Building has the best Display Energy Certificate
(DEC) for 2012? Visit http://www.tcd.ie/Buildings/collegeenergy.php for the
answer and other details about College Energy. Send your answer with your name
and College address by e-mail to energy.quiz@tcd.ie before 12 mid-day on Friday
22nd February 2013. The 2 winners will be drawn at the end of Green Week.

The Trinity Smart and Sustainable Cities Research Centre is organising a webbased photo contest on "Sustainable Behavior". (Good behavior: recycling car boot
sale, students on bike to college or segregating rubbish, etc. Bad behavior: lights left
on in a building and no-one there, dropping rubbish on to the ground, running water
in the bathroom, etc). Winner of the contest will get an Amazon Kindle. Check out:
greenwatch.dsg.cs.tcd.ie.

Thanks to the SU, the GSU, Student Societies and to the Central Societies Committee
for their support, to the many administrative departments in College who provided
logistical help particularly the Director of Buildings Office, the Communications
Office, the Trinity Centre for Biodiversity Research and The Science Gallery. A very
