Elementary Teachers and Student Interns Observe
International Education Week
Greenville, NC – The fifth annual Celebration of International Education, will be held on November 13,
2006 from 4:30-8:30 pm at City Hotel & Bistro. Beth Eckstein, with the Center for Economic Education
in the College of Business, and Dr. Carolyn Ledford, College of Education, will host this year’s event.
Various aspects of international education have been addressed in previous years. The focus of the
program this year is internationalizing teacher education. The target audience will be area K-5 teachers, as
well as the elementary education MAT students and their clinical teachers from the various counties in
eastern North Carolina.
For this program, the College of Education partners with the College of Business to provide appropriate
activities to teach about international topics in the elementary grades. Presenters will include Dr. Sylvie
Henning, Director of International Studies from the College of Arts and Science, Mrs. Beth Eckstein,
College of Business, and Dr. Carolyn Ledford, College of Education. Dr. Rosina Chia, Assistant Vice
Chancellor for Global Academic Initiatives, and Dr. Jami Leibowitz, College of Arts and Science, will
address the importance of international education. International businesses will also be represented.
The mini-workshop will provide classroom activities from 3 modules to include Cross Cultural
Communications, International Economics, and International Understanding. In addition, participants will
have the opportunity to observe a panel of campus international students who will share their school
experiences, and address questions from participants. Classroom teachers in attendance will receive a
resource of 14 lessons on economics, published by the National Council on Economic Education. All
participants will gain an appreciation of International Education and how to convey its importance in the
classroom.
This event is sponsored by East Carolina University, The College of Business and College of Education,
The Center for Economic Education and the Department of Elementary Education, The NC Council on
Economic Education and the National Council on Economic Education. Funding is provided by the US
Department of Education in coordination with the US Department of State.
