Undergraduate Directed Independent Study
Directed Independent Study permits the intermediate or advanced student an opportunity to undertake
the study of a topic not otherwise offered in the curriculum or to pursue a topic beyond or in greater
depth than is possible within the context of a regular course.
Complete the center portion of the form below and attach a course syllabus that defines the
problem/topic to be studied, indicates the course readings and assignments, outlines the weekly
schedule for the course, and describes the student’s final product. Please also include a grading scale
for this class.
Once you have met with the student and agreed on the course content and explained the course
requirements, secure the necessary signatures. This form must be signed by the student, faculty
member, and the Coordinator for Undergraduate studies. At that time, a copy of the form will be
provided to the student, faculty, and the advising office.
This process must be completed at least 3 days prior to the final day of drop/add so the course can be
added to the student’s class schedule.
