JOHN CABOT UNIVERSITY STUDENT GOVERNMENT
SENATE SESSION
March 6th, 2012
I) Introduction
1.Minute Approval
2. Roll Call
II) Board
The meeting of March 6th had several topics brought up by the board. Firstly,
logistical matters were handled in regards to personal meetings amongst the
Student Government President and individual SG members. Then, the Student
Government decided they would vote on if they wanted their individual photos
placed up within the school or just limit it to the website and facebook group.
Finally, we brought up the meeting SG had with the Cabinet over the referendum
results. We addressed the issues of the Tiber Campus study place which lead to
another meeting in which we went floor by floor to concentrate on what changes
must take place immediately after the fire inspection. We were shown the blue
prints of the library extension with different opinions on the matter. The issue of the
Green Wall in the Tiber Café was addressed, if students would like the wall can be
painted over. Students will now be able to print from their laptops with the new
technology the university has purchased to make printing accessible wherever a
student may be within the campuses. The issue of a large campus came up in which
the cabinet explained we chose being in the heart of Rome rather than the outskirts.
Overall the meeting was beneficial for both SG and the Cabinet in resolving some
key issues that we hope to further discuss with the Student Body.
III) Senate
A proposal was brought by a Senate member for a BBQ which would be in
collaboration with the Firsty Voyage Program> it was sent to debate.
IV) Committees
1. Academic Affairs
Academic Affairs had a meeting to work out the details of the forum
and created a power point presentation for SG which will be shown at the Forum as
well. The topic choice was :What does it mean to be an American University abroad?
The head of the committee spoke with Dean Merva in regards to the forum reports
SG drafts for the administration. The dean offered to attend the next forum however
this decision was motioned to debate and vote.
2. Visiting Student (3-5 minutes)
a. Blog Update
The Visiting Student Committee created a blog for John Cabot
students to use. It will be geared to introducing students to Rome and what
to do and where to eat within the city. The blog will be a media platform that
the JCU community must help launch. Every student should contribute their
two cents on Rome to make the city easier to navigate for the new students.
Another issue that was addressed was the term Study Abroad. Should we all
admit that everyone here is studying abroad in some form whether it be for
one semester, one year, or four years. It would be redefining the term to best
describe JCU. Some members disagreed stating that you cannot force the
global community to amend their definition of the term Study Abroad. A
member motioned to end debate.
3. ISLC (5 minutes)
a. Update
Phone calls have been made to the American universities and
international schools. JCU StuGov is working hard to make sure all
universities can come for the ISLC by reaching out to them via phone call.
Phone call instructions have been distributed to those who were given the
task. The logo design must be completed by Thursday while the quotes for
the budget must be given to the SG treasurer asap.
4. Social Events
a. Update
working on getting a meeting date.
Decisions: to get flowers for the March 8th forum for women.
5. Spring Fling
a. Update

edited the menu for the Spring Fling. Dates are April 21st!
Tickets will go on sale after break.
V) Task Forces
1. Rate My Professor
a. Who wrote reviews?
VI) Open Session (Debates)
BBQ PROPOSAL
Many StuGov members were hesitant on calling a vote because of the
vagueness of the plan. Who would fund the bbq and who is the bbq geared
towards? We do not want to not include any students since we gear towards
school unifying social events. The idea of paying also came up, if StuGov must
self-fund or partially fund, a price must be set because of budget constraints.
The Student Government Motioned to not vote and wait for answers to the
proposal gaps observed within the meeting debate.
Administration Presence for this upcoming Forum:
StuGov agreed that it was not the forum for the administration since
the specific topic was not really interlinked to the administration. Some members
believed the Dean should be present or even silent during the forum. Overall the
conclusion lead to the next forum not including administration, but instead a new
proposal came up. StuGov wants to host a Q&A between administration and
students. The administration would consist of a Panel that included the librarians to
the Cabinet members. The Academic Affairs committee will further the proposal
along.
BLOG PROPOSAL> not debated on
Photo on Bulletin Board (2 minutes)
Overall SG members did not favor individual portraits on a
bulletin board within the school. Instead one group shot was favored and
with the list of names & emails made available to students for better
communication options. The debate lead to a vote.
