Basic Unit (1A10.10) Location : 16-1R Concept/Purpose: Basic Units Procedure/Explanation: The demo consists of a small collection of objects that represent length, time, and mass: The following is a list of the objects used: Length: A yard stick, a standard meter stick, ruler, tennis shoe, a plastic pink flamingo, and globe Mass: A one-pound section of brass pipe and a one-kilogram section of brass pipe. Time: An hourglass, a sundial, a pendulum and a globe These objects are used to discuss the history of units, and also points out that the basic units are relative to however you want to define them (the tennis shoe as a basic unit of length, for example).
