How to Prepare
First and foremost, get your application in to the University as soon as possible to
ensure that you are accepted to attend school here. You will then want to be sure
that you are in top physical condition. We have listed some tips below to help you
prepare for cheerleading tryouts at RU.
Physical Preparation Tips for Tryouts
Please note that we are a small co-ed team. All of the males are bases however
not all of the females are tops. We recommend 2 excellent resources to help you
gain some experience:
1. Local All-Star Gyms : Often a local cheerleading gym will offer private
tumbling, co-ed stunt sessions and or all girl stunting. These private lessons
can be helpful when taught by a qualified coach in a safe environment.
2. It's important to be in athletic shape! For women, our suggestion is to take
palates classes, weight training classes (make sure you use lightweights but
do high reps), any type of cardio classes (step aerobics etc.) For men, we
recommend weight training; building strength will keep you safe and
improve your skills. Both men and women should be able to run a mile
without stopping! (Always check with your health provider before you start
any type of new workout routine)
Skill Requirements
Each prospective cheerleader will be evaluated on the following:




Motions (sidelines, & short cadence will be taught)
Toe Touch Jump, Front Hurdler, Pike and Double Toe Touch (women only)
Ability to lead and engage a crowd in a collegiate manner (do not
underestimate the importance of this) Time out routine will be taught at
tryouts and evaluated.
Standing and Running Tumbling on a regular cheer floor (NOT a spring)
Examples might be standing back hand spring, back or front tuck, standing
back-handspring back tuck and a running tumbling pass.
If you are have no tumbling experience you must be willing to work on skills!

Stunts All-Girl must be able to base top or do both (extension, liberty, heel
stretch full down, and shoulder stand)
You may get into and out of each stunt any way you like but must follow
the AACCA safety guidelines. (Some examples might be 360 squish
extension,....full down, or cradle.)
Co-Ed must be able to learn post up to hands, toss chair

Interview- the most important part of the tryout. Anyone can learn how to
do these skills, but not everyone has the dedication, heart and
determination to be an athlete. If you are new to cheerleading I would
encourage you to try out anyway!
Method of Evaluation
The team is selected by the coaching staff at RU. Tryouts are closed to the public.
What to Wear
Our school colors are Navy and Gold. These are the colors that we recommend
you wear to the tryout. Our school bookstore offers a wide selection of RU attire.
It may be helpful to note that our cheerleaders have a very clean cut, modest and
neatly groomed image.
Men - comfortable practice shorts and a T-shirt (no tank tops for the men). Our
male cheerleaders are generally clean shaven with closely cropped hair.
Women - practice shorts and a T-shirt, tank or "full length" sports bra. (nothing
too loose or baggy) Ladies hair and makeup should be game-ready
*Attire should not be revealing and shorts should NOT be rolled down on the hips.
*No jewelry of any kind is permitted including belly rings and other body
piercings. We also recommend that you cover any tattoos.
What to Bring the First Day of Tryouts
1. Bring a "copy" of either your RU Student I.D. or "copy" of your acceptance
letter.
* Please do not bring the originals as a copy machine will not be available.
2. Bring a "copy" of your medical insurance card.
3. Bring a completed tryout packet (Click Here to go to Tryout Packet)
Can I Tryout by Sending a Video Tape?
No. You must go through an IN PERSON tryout in order to be selected to the
team. This means that in order to tryout you must make the trip to our campus
and show your skills in person.
