BMSC-GA 4414, Disorders of the Nervous System - Syllabus - 4 credits This course will cover key neurological and psychiatric diseases. Each week a different disorder will be addressed in a 2.5 hr-long class. Part of each class session will include an overview by a clinical expert, who will provide a clinical understanding of the disease, including signs and symptoms. A second part will be given by a scientist who does basic research in the field, who will discuss experimental strategies and current hypotheses about pathophysiological mechanisms at the cellular and genetic level. Readings will be provided from each of these experts for each topic. Grading will be based on class participation and a set of written and oral assignments. Attendance is mandatory and persistent tardiness or missed classes will result in a maximum grade of no more than B. This course designed is for advanced graduate students, and assumes each student is familiar with all material covered in the graduate level Cellular and Molecular Neuroscience and Systems Neuroscience courses.
