The Starved Rock Country Junior Master Gardener program is open to any youth 8-18 years of age. Youth must
pay the $20 annual 4-H enrollment fee through the University of Illinois Extension Office.
SPIN Club Sessions—JMG Candidates must attend a SPIN Club session once a month for overview of skills to
master and individual tasks to achieve toward earning a JMG certification.

Junior Master Gardener certification is available for youth who are currently enrolled in grades 3 to 8. In
addition to attending regular garden club meetings, JMG youth complete 44 group and individual
projects to demonstrate leadership skills, critical thinking, personal pride, responsibility and community
involvement. A passion for gardening is fostered through a weekly mentorship program in the field
(Tuesdays, CL Farms) and a career track is offered for ambitious JMG youth (Saturdays, Ottawa Farmers
Market). JMG youth must organize one monthly community service project May to September and
display their lessons learned at either the LaSalle County 4-H Fair in July and/or at Grand Ridge
Community Festival in August. Youth completing the JMG requirements are awarded a Junior Master
Gardener certificate in October.
The fee for JMG certification is $60 and youth must enroll in 4-H through the Extension office ($20 annual fee).
JMG youth must Enroll by June 15th to participate for 2016 JMG certification program.
