Directions: Charles is the coordinator for a dog
sled race. He is in charge of setting up
checkpoints and first aid stations. First aid
must be available within five miles of any
point on the course. First aid is also available at
the checkpoints. Thus if two checkpoints are
exactly ten miles apart, a first aid station is not
needed since any point between would be five
miles or less from first aid. If the checkpoints
are more than ten miles apart, a first aid station
will be required.
Using a scale of one unit equals one mile, Charles created a map of the first four
checkpoints. He designated the starting point as the origin. The checkpoints are as
follows (in order):
-Starting Point (0,0)
-Checkpoint A (4,5)
-Checkpoint B (-6,9)
-Checkpoint C (-13,1)
-Checkpoint D (-7,-8)
Which checkpoints are close enough (within ten miles) and thus do not require any first
aid stations? Make sure you include an explanation with necessary computations,
sketches, formulas, and notes.
When checkpoints are more than ten miles apart, a first aid station will be placed at the
point half way between. How many first aid stations are needed and where will they be
placed (at what coordinates)?
