Why did I research this question? I chose to do my social research project about swimming because I enjoy swimming and train with Central Milton Keynes Swimming Club. I really liked swimming lessons, and having lessons gave me the skills and confidence to join a club. I wanted to find out if other children in my school had also found swimming lessons helpful. How did I make sure my research was ethical? • I made sure that children who took part signed a consent form • The children did not put their names on the questionnaires, it was anonymous • I made sure that the questions I asked didn’t upset anyone • When the children gave their questionnaires back I made sure that I stored the information properly, so it was kept confidential and not shared with anyone • When this project is finished I will make sure that all the questionnaires are destroyed Collecting data 1. I decided on my topic 2. I thought about the questions I should use and chose a mix of open and closed questions 3. Then I made my questionnaire. 4. I gave out the questionnaires to children in my school in Years 1 – 6, who are between 5 and 11 years old 5. Collected in the completed questionnaires 6. I analysed the data by using a 5 bar gate to count the answers to closed questions. I coded the answers to the open questions. I gave out 60 questionnaires and got 38 back Results Q1:What year are you in? How cold the water is I would like them to be longer so I learn more I would like to be able to hold my breath for longer under water Conclusion I found that children had more positive comments about out of school lessons. I found that allot of Y4 children Said they had swimming lessons But when I asked in school or out of School they said in school. If I did my project again …… I would change my sampling to snowball sampling, so the questionnaire only went to children having swimming lessons I wouldn’t print my questionnaire on both the front and back of the paper. Lots of children didn’t realise there were questions on the back. It would also have made analysing the answers easier I would have used more closed questions. This would have made it easier to analyse the data.
