There are often valid reasons that a student is unable to finish a degree by the completion date noted on the I-20/DS-2019. If this is the case, the student is required to apply for a Program Extension through the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) administered by the International Students & Scholars office. ELIGIBILITY REQUIRMENTS FOR PROGRAM EXTENSION Have “continually maintained status” per USCIS and UW regulations. Submit proof that the delay in completion is “caused by compelling academic or medical reasons, such as changes of major or research topics, unexpected research problems, or documented illnesses”. Delays caused by academic probation or suspension, or retaking classes due to previous failure, are not acceptable reasons for program extension. HOW TO APPLY FOR AN EXTENSION Submit completed extension request form, including academic adviser’s section, to ISS before the program end date; preferably 30 days before. Provide financial support for the period of the extension to ISS with the extension request form. Examples: bank statement, graduate assistantship noted on extension form, scholarship letter, etc. If you have dependents on your I-20, you need to provide funding proof for their continued support. You will be notified when the new I-20/DS-2019 has been issued. You may then stop by ISS and sign it and have it for your records. Please keep all of your I-20s or DS-2019s as you may need them in your future, especially if changing status or applying for various work authorizations. Do not throw previous documents away!
