The University of Montevallo Department of English and Foreign Languages Station 6420 Montevallo, AL 35115 The Cox Scholarship for Outstanding Achievement in English – 2016-2017 Description: This scholarship was established by Mr. John Cox in 2012 to provide financial assistance to an English major at the University of Montevallo who demonstrates outstanding academic achievement and strong potential for future success. The award provides $2,000 for use during the student’s junior year. One award will be made annually. Qualified applicants must be English majors, enrolled full time during the period of the award, and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 during the period of the award. The scholarship will be awarded in two payments, $1,000 for use during the Fall 2016 semester and $1,000 for use during the Spring 2017 semester. The recipient will be chosen by selected members of the English and Foreign Language Department faculty. Requirements and Procedures: 1. Applicants should be English majors and have junior status in the year the award is paid. 2. Applicants should have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above. 3. Eligible students should submit the following by February 19, 2016, to Professor Eric Vaccarella, Chair of the Scholarship and Awards Committee, care of the Department of English and Foreign Languages: A completed application form An unofficial copy of your most recent transcript from the Registrar’s Office indicating all completed classes and the classes for which you are currently registered Two letters of recommendation from faculty members of the University of Montevallo Department of English and Foreign Languages who can speak to your performance as a student in the Department. Please note that letters cannot be from active members of the Scholarship and Awards Committee or from the current Department Chair. An essay of between 800-1,200 words that addresses the following topic: Define what “Outstanding Achievement” as an English major means to you and discuss how you have demonstrated outstanding achievement as an English major at the University of Montevallo 4. The Scholarship and Awards Committee will select the winner. 5. The award will be announced at the Honors Day Ceremony. The scholarship for each student will be paid in two equal sums, dispersed at the beginning of the Fall 2016 and Spring 2017 semesters. 6.
