Harney County 4HNewsletter December 2010 The new year registration is happening now. Members need to reregister and pay the $15 per 4–H member participation fee by January 15th 2011. Fees will be used to run the 4-H program, but will not be used for staff payroll. Fees increase to $20 per member after 1/10/11. Families have a $30 maximum Fee (or $40 maximum after 1/10/11). Some clubs are fund raising to help with the participation fee. If you have questions or need further information, please contact Shana at the Harney County Extension Office 573-2506. 4-H Enrollment for fair participation is due March 1st. Each year all 4-H members and 4-H leaders must complete the paperwork and pay their $1 accident insurance fee and the $15 Participation fee (if paid by 1/10/11, $20 if paid later). Enrollment packets were given to 4-H Leaders in the fall or can be picked up at the Extension Office now. . Pay now to avoid expensive late fees…. Be sure to send thank you notes to buyers of your market animal and those who increased the prices of auction animals. Remember to keep copies of thank you notes for your 4-H Record book. 4-H Clubs, Starting the New Year 4-H recruitment was held in December at Slater and Hines schools. If you are interested in joining a club, please call the Extension Office at 573-2506 for more information. March 1st is the deadline to be registered in 4-H and participate in the Harney County fair. New leaders are always needed. If you are interested in becoming a leader call the Extension Office. COOL Forms The COOL form needed, for all 4-H animals sold at the Harney County Fair. They can be found on the Harney County Web site, or at the Extension office. Check out the other records that are also available on our web page. http://extension.oregonstate.edu/harney/ 4-H Supporter of the year The 4-H Leaders Association is requesting letters nominating 4-H Supporters. Everyone knows a parent, leader, community supporter that helps to make our 4-H program great. Please take a moment to write the nomination letter. Mail to the Extension Office and Shana will keep them in a file until our 4 –H Awards Night in October. 4-H Fundraising Dinner: The Fundraising dinner will be February 26th at the Elks. 4-H Raffle tickets for a digital camera will be available on 1/03/11. 4-H clubs are encourage to decorate tables, based on the 2011 Fair theme or the 2011 4-H Camp theme of the” Hollywood”. Game booths will include Cakewalk, Bingo, Fish Pond, Face Painting and Button making. 4-H Clubs need to volunteers to man the booths. Each 4-H Clubs needs to donate an item to the silent auction. Each member is asked to bring a cake for the Cake Walk. 2011 Outbound 4-H International Exchange Programs If you are interested in participating in the 2011 4-H International Exchange to Australia, Costa Rica or Japan, application materials are available on the Oregon 4-H website: http://oregon.4h.oregonstate.edu/. On the web site click on "Things to Do", then on “Travel Abroad”. This will bring you to the first page for the 4-H World Citizenship Project. Now go to the 4-H International Exchange Programs section. Applications are due postmarked by January 7, 2011. Junior Leaders Strict Enrollment Deadlines If you are even thinking about entering anything at state fair, new state rules require that 4-H enrollment is inplace by January 31st. There will be no exceptions. Be certain your enrollment is in by the 15th of January. Junior Leaders were recognized at the 4-H Achievement Night. Junior leaders received gold pins for their efforts. To receive a Junior Leader Pin for your leadership efforts, you must register as a Jr. Leader and COMPLETE a Junior Leadership Record Form in your Record Book. Many of you do the work of Junior Leaders, but do not fill out the paperwork for your Record Book. EOLR Is designed to enhance your leadership and communication skills. It is a great way to make new friends and learn new skills in a very positive environment. Julee Withee and will be serving as Governing Board members from Harney County. Registration materials will be mailed in early March to older youth in Harney County. Cost for the weekend is Registrations are due in the Extension Office by March 20th. Remember the registration fee is ½ price or $37.50 if you sell fundraising raffle tickets for the Harney County 4-H. The Media & Know Your Government (KYG) How does the media impact public policy making at local, state and national levels? Do we analyze what we see and hear in the local and national media? How does the media impact candidates, campaigns and political messages? Join teens from many counties in Oregon, Feb. 26– 28, 2010 to learn how the media influences our civic involvement. The program will take place in Salem at the Phoenix Grand Hotel and Capitol Building. The teen Planning Team has proposed a fun and interactive KYG program. The KYG program is designed for teens in grades 9-12 (8th graders are welcome with consent of County 4-H Agent). 4-H members, their friends, and other interested teens are invited to attend Oregon’s Know Your State Government program. Educational goals for participants in Know Your Government program include: - Understanding how local, state and national government works. - Applying skills for civic engagement. - Exploring and debating issues. - Having fun, new experiences in a safe environment. Registration fee of $160 and forms are due Wednesday, February 10th. Fee includes: all program materials, lodging (4 teens per room), breakfast each morning, dinner Thursday evening, entertainment Friday evening, snacks, and lunch on Saturday. Camp Counselor Training Sessions Older youth in grades 9 –12 are encouraged to attend Camp Counselor Training sessions and become a 4-H Camp Counselor. Training sessions for 4-H Camp Counselors will be held April 20th in Seneca. An overnight session will be held on May 22nd, and another evening training will be held later in May. 4-H campers and counselors will experience the Wild West at 4-H Camp July 5-9, 2010 in the beautiful Logan Valley at Lake Creek Camp. Counselors are selected on their attendance at trainings, teamwork, willingness to work hard, dependability, trustworthiness, spirit, respect of others, ability to follow directions and work with others, personal strengths and abilities, and completing and turning in the appropriate forms in a timely manner. 4-H Camp is going to “Hollywood” The “Stars” will come out for a week of fun and camp at the Grant/Harney 4-H Camp as they experience Hollywood! 4-H Camp will be held July 5-9th at Lake Creek Camp in the beautiful Logan Valley. 4-H Members in grades 4 – 6 are encouraged to attend. Cost will be $180. Registration materials will be mailed in May. 4-H members who sell raffle tickets qualify for ½ the registration fee from the 4-H Leaders Association. Mark the dates on your calendar and plan to attend. 4-H Market ANIMAL Tagging 4-H/FFA Market Steer tagging will be, March 2011. The 4-H/FFA Auction Committee plans to be at several locations around the county to tag the animals. 4-H/FFA Market Lamb & Hog tagging will be June 15, 2011. 4-H Summer Days at OSU Looking for a fun summer experience on campus? Check out 4-H Summer Conference to be held June on Oregon State University’s campus in Corvallis. Classes, activities, meeting new friends, and a great experience are all part of 4-H Summer Days. Look for registration materials in the mail this spring. The theme is “4-H is Green”. The registration fee for Summer Conference 2011 is $200 per individual. 4-H Ambassador: 4-H Ambassadors in Oregon are young people who are committed to 4-H and are ready to give back to the program at both the local and state level. They are enthusiastic about 4-H because of what they have received from 4-H. The Ambassador Program is a fun and challenging way for youth to learn valuable leadership and life skills. 4-H Ambassadors have proven to be enthusiastic leaders and promoters of 4-H in their club, their county and/or their state. 4-H Ambassadors in Oregon are young people who are committed to 4-H and are ready to give back to the program at both the local and state level. 4-H members in the 10th & 11th grade are encouraged to apply. The application deadline for the 4-H Ambassador Program and the Statewide Ambassador Team is May 1. 2010 Gold Medal Winners 4-H Contest Night Start practicing your 4-H presentation now. 4-H Contest Night will be held on at the Courthouse. 4-H Presentation (demonstrations & illustrated talks) competition will take place in the Courthouse Lobby. The 4-H Judging Card contest will be held in the Basement Meeting Room. 4-H Recruitment Posters are due . Ribbons and Premiums will be award during Fair. Please come join us at the 4-H Fundraising Dinner. This is Harney County 4-H’s annual fundraising event. Every 4-H member participates in the fundraising efforts. Funds raised are used to provide scholarships for 4-H camp fees, OSU Summer Conference, leadership retreats, fair trophies and travel moneys for other 4-H Leadership opportunities.
