Money for Rabbit Cages
at Fair
All 4-H Clubs are asked to
raise money and contribute
to the purchase of new
rabbit cages at the fairgrounds. The
current rabbit cages were donated to the
4-H program to display rabbits and small
animals over 20 years ago. The cages
were used when donated to 4-H and with
20 years of heavy use, the wire has
disintegrated. The 4-H Leaders
Association is asking each 4-H club to
contribute $30 (or amount your club is
able to donate) to the purchase of new
Fair rabbit cages. Anne Sheeter & Shana
will provide pizza for the club that raises
the most money.
ED Display with Breeding Project
*** New Requirement****
4-H members with a breeding project are
to complete an educational display for fair.
The Educational Display could be a poster
on the breed of your breeding project, the
animal genetics of your animals, a
pictorial chart of your total breeding
project, etc. The possibilities are endless.
Educational Display requirements are
listed in the Fair Premium Book. During
the winter months is a perfect time to
complete this requirement for your
4-H Breeding Project.
4-H Thank You Notes
It is never too late to send a thank you for
an award received, a kindness shown, or
for help received. Be sure to send thank
you notes to buyers of your market animal
and those who increased the prices of
auction animals. Remember to keep
copies of thank you notes for your 4-H
Record book.
4-H Supporter of the year
The 4-H Leaders Association is
requesting letters nominating 4-H
Supporters. Last year at the 4-H Awards
Night, no supporters were recognized due
to lack of nominations. Every club is
requested to write a short letter
(3 paragraphs) telling why your
nomination should be recognized.
Everyone knows a parent, leader,
community supporter that helps to make
our 4-H program great. Please take a
moment to write the nomination letter.
Mail to the Extension Office and Shana
will keep them in a file until our 4 –H
Awards Night in October.

Motivate 4-H members to keep
Records
A positive, enthusiastic attitude about
keeping 4-H records is a great motivation
factor. Make record keeping as simple as
possible. Some ways to help members
are:
* Have members us a calendar or small
notebook to record things as they are
done.
* Take some photographs of your
members in action for their record books.
* Take time in 4-H meetings on a regular
basis, or at special meetings, to work on
records.
* Explain both the “whys” and “hows” of
record keeping, including the awards
based on records.
* Make a lists of possible 4-H community
activities that your members might have
attended to “jog” their memories. Show
interest in each person’s records and give
help when needed.
* Have older members be a “record
keeping buddy” and match them with
younger members.

The Carcass of Merit Program will be
changing slightly this year to better reflect
industry standards and to improve the
educational value of 4-H market animal
projects. The decision was the result of a
discussions at the 4-H Leaders Association
Meetings & 4-H/FFA Auction Committee
Meetings. Requirements for a Market Animal
of Merit will be adapted from the Washington
State Steer, Hog and Lamb of Merit Programs
described in the Washington State University
Extension Publications EB1460E, EB1461E
and EB1462E, respectively. These
publications are available at the Harney
County Extension Office (450 N Buena Vista,
Burns, OR) or via the internet at
the following web addresses:

Create an awareness of
current market standards.
Recognize exhibitors for
producing high-value

practices that result in
desirable carcasses.
Promote and improve the
educational value of market
animal 4-H projects.

The Average Daily Gain criterion used as one
of the standards for selecting a Market Animal

particular species be tagged and weighed in
on the same day using an Oregon State
Certified Scale. Participants that are unable
to take part in the initial tagging and weigh-in
opportunities (see 4-H calendar) are ineligible
to participate in the Steer, Hog or Sheep of
Merit Programs. .
Neither the Market Animal of Merit nor
