Advanced Regents Living Environment Ms. Finkelstein CLASS PROCEDURES & POLICIES 2012-2013 Your grade in this class will be based upon the following criteria: 1. 2. 3. 4. Tests and Quizzes Class work (participation and performance) Completion of Homework Attendance and Punctuality 5. Laboratory Work Tests and Quizzes 1. The best indicator of how much you have learned and retained is your achievement on tests and quizzes. 2. Therefore, tests and quizzes count most toward your quarter grade in this class. 3. You will always be notified before a test. Some quizzes will be unannounced. 4. Tests will last a full period and will include both multiple-choice and written-response questions. 5. Extra help will always be available before tests and quizzes. Classwork 1. Students who ask meaningful questions and participate during class discussions make lessons more valuable for all students in the class. 2. You are responsible for bringing any science materials that you will require to class each day. No student will be allowed to go to his or her locker to get a binder, homework assignment, or lab manual. Being unprepared for class is recorded as a homework “0”in my grade book. 3. Non-science related newspapers, games, and any sound, video, or telephone devices are NOT to be used in this class. If I see them, I will take them away and give them to the Science Chairman. Homework 1. Homework will reinforce class work, and may introduce new concepts that you need to know for exams and quizzes. 2. You are expected to complete homework on time in order to succeed in this class. 3. All homework assignments must have your name and date on them to receive credit. Without a name, NO CREDIT WILL BE GIVEN. 4. Every two homework assignments that you miss will take one point off of your quarter average. NO EXCEPTIONS! Attendance and Punctuality 1. You are expected to be in your seat ready to begin working by the time the bell rings. 2. Three “lates” to class equal a “cut” according to school policy, and this will be strictly enforced in this class. 3. Cutting will NOT be tolerated, and work (including tests and quizzes) missed on such days will NOT be able to be made up at a later date. Laboratory Work 1. This class ends with a New York State Regents exam in June that requires that you prepare a lab report for each lab that we do throughout the course of the year. 2. At least 1200 minutes of hands-on lab activities must be completed including four New York State mandated lab investigations in order to sit for the exam. 3. Any student that is missing more than two labs during any particular quarter will receive a “50” as their average for that quarter. 4. Inappropriate behavior in the lab will not be tolerated. Students will be asked to leave the classroom, thereby reducing their number of total lab minutes. Notebook 1. You are expected to bring your RED 3-ring binder and a pen/pencil to class each day. This binder must contain loose-leaf paper and dividers for the following sections: Notes, Handouts, Tests & Quizzes, Lab, and Homework. 2. Keep your work in date order. 3. Discard nothing; the Regents will cover material beginning with day one. Grade Determination Approximate weight of factors contributing to your final quarter average: - Tests – 60% - Quizzes – 15% - Labs – 15% - Homework & Projects – 10% (varies for each quarter) I look forward to an exciting and productive year with you all. Please keep this sheet in the front of your notebook. I have read and I understand these policies and procedures.
