Self-portraits have a longer continuous history in Asian art than in Europe. Illuminated manuscripts contain a number of apparent selfportraits. Albrecht Dürer was an artist highly conscious of his public image and reputation; he probably depicted himself more often than any artist before him, producing at least twelve images. One of the most famous and most prolific of self-portraitists was Vincent van Gogh, who painted himself thirty-seven times. The self-portrait can be a very effective form of advertising for an artist.
