"An idea is our visual reaction to something seen - in real life, in
our memory, in our imagination, in our dreams."~ Anna Held
Audette from the book, The Blank Canvas
• As an artist you are
training your eye to
observe/notice things
about the world in
which you live
• What can you look to
for inspiration?
• What are things that
you stop and notice?
Pieter Claesz Still Life with Roemer and Oysters, 1642oil on panel
Reflective objects are unique and challenging
Constructing a still life
Treat your still life like
a separate work of
art!
Apply compositional
techniques: If there is
value, depth of space,
movement, repetition,
balance, texture,
unity, color harmony,
etc. in your still life- it
will automatically be
in your drawing!
A complex composition would include more
overlapping and variety in objects
Paul CézanneStill Life with a Ginger Jar and
Eggplants, 1890-94oil on canvas
Vincent van Gogh Shoes, 1888 oil on canvas
Can your objects symbolize something like a mood or your personality?
John Kuhn (b. 1948)PeppermintsAcrylic on board
Can your objects be chosen by a design principle like
repetition or pattern?
