Frank Carey High School is designed to provide string students with a higher understanding of string techniques, musicianship, and performance experience. Classroom Rules: Be on time to class every day Come prepared to class every day with the required materials. Respect one another, your stand partner, and yourself Take proper care of your instrument, music, and other equipment. A lack of participation will result in a lower “Class Participation” grade. Students are required to purchase a SmartMusic subscription. This program will allow students to practice orchestra and solo music at home with immediate feedback. Playing tests throughout the year will be given through this program, which will be a part of their “Playing Tests/Homework” grade. A subscription costs $40 per school year and it’s encouraged to buy a microphone for $20. Can be purchased from www.smartmusic.com Students must perform in the Senior High Winter and Spring Concert, which take place in December and May, respectively. Families will be notified with more information as the event approaches. Failure to perform in the concerts will result in a failing grade for that marking period. Students are required to attend sectionals, which take place during the school day. A failure to attend these sections will result in a lower “Sectional Attendance” grade. If the students cannot attend the assigned sectional, a make-up is scheduled and must be attended in lieu of the regular sectional. Practicing at home is important and must be done at least 4 days a week for a minimum of 15 minutes. Although Practice Logs are not required for this class, practicing is still important and must be done regularly. I have the right to implement Practice Logs if home practicing becomes a regular issue. Grading Policy: The following sections are averaged together to come up with a marking period grade: o Class Participation: 20% o Playing Tests/Homework: 60% o Sectional Attendance: 20% Extra Curricular Activities: Students in Senior High Orchestra are eligible for participation in extra curricular musical activities. These activities are encouraged and do take extra time and effort on the part of the student.
