DEPARTMENT COURSE OFFERINGS 2012-2013 ART COURSE DESCRIPTION 2012-2013 3 The Art Program encourages students to develop skills, to create works of art and study works of art within a historical and multi-cultural perspective; acquire abilities to identify, interpret and evaluate works of art; and investigate issues and questions concerning the nature and value of art. Grades 8 and 9 Art 8 is a ½ year course that introduces 8th grade students to the concepts of space, structure, movement, color and light explored through a wide range of visual art experiences in drawing, painting, crafts, sculpture and electronic media. Studio in Art (Grade 9-12, full year, 1 credit) is a comprehensive course that includes the study of elements and principles of design, the role of art within our global cultures, and movements and trends in the art world. Students develop abilities to express themselves through experiences in drawing, painting and sculpture. Students interested in elective courses must successfully complete Studio Art. Successful completion of this course will satisfy the Art/Music graduation requirement for one unit of credit. ** Indicate courses will only be offered every other year. Grades 10-12 Drawing and Painting (1 year, 1 credit) Students interested in AP Drawing are strongly encouraged to enroll. Students will develop their artistic skills through the exploration of materials, and techniques. Students will work in variety of mediums including charcoal, pastel, watercolor, tempera paint, acrylic paint and ink. Digital Design (½ year, ½ credit) Students use computers to assist in creating, retouching and altering original artwork. Students will learn how to manipulate and create images with Adobe Photoshop, digital cameras and scanners. **Media Arts (1 year, 1 credit) Students interested in AP 2-D are strongly encouraged to enroll. Students develop aesthetic sensitivity through the study of media such as traditional and digital photography, film, video, and computer art. Students will be introduced to traditional darkroom techniques. Students must have a 35mm camera. **Illustration & Design (½ year, ½ credit) Illustration combines personal expression with pictorial representation to convey social commentary to story interpretation. Students will create works of art with a message through drawing, painting and printmaking. AP Program Grades 11 and 12 **Advanced Placement Drawing (1 year, 1 credit) The AP Drawing course is designed to continue with a broad range of drawing issues such as painting and observational drawing. Students will continue to use a variety of media such as pencil, ink, charcoal, oil pastel, and collage. There must be a commitment to artistic excellence. Students interested in art are strongly encouraged to enroll. PLAN AHEAD! 2013-14 **Advanced Placement 2-Dimensional Design ** Advanced Placement Art History General AP Course Information: Students that receive a score of three or more on the AP Studio in Art portfolio will be eligible to receive three college credits. If a student does not choose to pursue artistic training at the college level, these credits may be used to fulfill an elective college level course. Although there is no written exam for AP Drawing, students are expected to prepare and submit a portfolio of artwork to the AP College Board in May. Department Chairperson approval is required for Advanced Placement Art Courses.
