The Purpose of the New Role:
The purpose of the role will be to deliver timely and high quality test results in support of the
School of XXXXX initiatives in research, teaching and commercial work. The role holder will
provide a range of technical support activities for example carrying out the preparation and
testing of a wide range of materials.

Main Responsibilities
To perform routine testing with minimal direct supervision for the XXXX research
projects, and commercial clients, ensuring that the work is consistently completed to a
high standard, within required deadlines whilst staying responsive to changing priorities.
Plan work and prioritise routinely, escalating problems or conflicts to more senior
colleagues.
Consider Health and Safety in the performance of all duties by assessing the risks of the
planned activity and performing the tasks having considered, and acted to secure, the
safety of yourself and others and maintain a safe work environment through conducting
testing to time and quality requirements, check status of equipment, notify and take
action on non-conformance, where appropriate.
To maintain clean equipment and a high standard of housekeeping. Perform basic
calibrations and maintenance of equipment and glassware.
To conduct under supervision the preparation/testing of materials and the interpretation
of data / test results, presenting findings accurately.
To monitor and maintain stocks levels/stores of basic equipment and supplies ensuring
that equipment, consumables and work areas are ready to use as and when required.
Assist, guide and support students and/or other technicians whilst conducting testing
activities in the laboratory and assist researchers with the conduct of their testing. This
may also include providing guidance and support to junior colleagues through on-the-job
training/coaching in own area, in the use of equipment and techniques.
Communicate effectively information/instructions to researchers, other technical staff,
laboratory management, academics, commercial staff, suppliers and maintenance staff

both internally and externally. Maintain accurate data records, draft routine document
control.
The role holder will contribute towards technical team meetings and/or research project
meetings, as required and have involvement in the development, testing, and
construction of new equipment and/or techniques.

Essential
A minimum of two A Levels in
relevant subjects or equivalent
vocational qualifications (NVQ, City &
Guild), plus some experience in a
relevant technical/scientific role.
Or
Considerable work experience in a
relevant technical/scientific role.
Excellent oral and written
communication skills, including the
ability to communicate information
with clarity.
Desirable
Developing technical skills in
relevant area.
Knowledge of XXXX testing
