The Purpose of the New Role:
The purpose of this role will be to provide technical support and assistance to technical and
academic staff, researchers and undergraduates within the School/Department of XXXX to enable
and ensure the safe and effective operation of research, teaching and laboratory activities.

Main Responsibilities
To provide general assistance, under direction, preparing and carrying out test samples in
the different associated areas and materials, which may include using
machinery/equipment.
To assist with setting up laboratory experiments and demonstrations for undergraduates
and researchers to enable the practical laboratory classes and research to be carried out
efficiently in the area(s) of XXXX.
To ensure that XXXX facilities are available by transporting goods and equipment, when
required and replenishing stocks of consumables/stores of basic equipment.
Maintain clean and tidy laboratories; removing waste, cleaning/clearing away any
equipment for laboratory classes and audio visual facilities, and the basic maintenance of
apparatus and equipment. Identify problems or difficulties and follow local escalation
procedures.
To collect and receive materials from university stores and suppliers maintaining accurate
routine records through basic data entry.
Maintain effective communications with colleagues using University of Nottingham systems
including e-mail.
Carries out routine record keeping, filing, data inputting, cataloguing, logging and
maintenance of simple databases, ensuring accurate records are maintained.
Consider Health and Safety in the performance of all duties by assessing the risks of the
planned activity and performing the tasks having considered, and acted to secure, the
safety of yourself and others.
Any other duties appropriate to the role and level.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience
Essential
Qualifications/
Minimum of a good standard of
Education
education evidenced by up to 5
GCSEs (grade C and above) or
equivalent, including maths and
English
OR
Previous work experience in a
relevant role.
Skills/Training
Basic IT skills in the following
packages XXXX
Good oral and written communication
skills, including the ability to
communicate information with clarity.
Desirable
Knowledge of audio visual and
related IT equipment
A basic understanding of the
principles of the XXXX
scientific/technical discipline.
Ability to work accurately in order to
maintain high standards, with the

Ability to adopt a methodical

Experience
Ability to lift and move objects as this
role will involve storing and moving

Additional Information
The role is to support other technicians, students, researchers and academics within the
School/Department of XXXX to ensure that the technical support is efficient, effective and timely.
The post is designed to take some of the more routine work away from the more highly skilled
technicians. The role holder will carry out simple testing without supervision and work within all
disciplines in the laboratories.
