Making decisions and checking
results
Know what each digit in a two-digit number represents, including 0 as
a place holder, and partition two-digit numbers into a multiple of tens and
ones.
Use and begin to read the vocabulary of comparing and ordering numbers
Compare two given two-digit numbers, say which is more or less, and give
a number which lies between them.
Say the number that is 1 or 10 more or less than any given number.
Order whole numbers to at least 100, and position them on a number line

Mental calculation strategies
(+ and -)
Money and ‘real life’ problems
Making decisions and checking
results
Use knowledge that addition can be done in any order to do mental calculations
more efficiently. For example: put the larger number first and count on; partition
into tens and units, then recombine (e.g. 34 + 53 = 30 + 50 + 4 + 3).
Add mentally a 'near multiple of 10' to or from a two-digit number by adding
10, 20, 30 and adjusting.
Use known number facts and place value to add mentally.
Bridge through a multiple of 10, then adjust.

Give each pair of children a set of
0 -100 cards and a set of 11 – 19
cards. Ask them to select a card

answer.
Give each pair of children a set of
0 – 9 cards. Ask them to shuffle
them and place them upside down.
They take it in turns to select three
cards and make one addition and
one subtraction, e.g. 3, 4 and 9
could give 34 – 9 and 43 + 9. Their
partner must find the answers.
As above, but give the pupils two
sets of 0 – 9 cards and ask them to
select four cards, e.g. 5, 4, 3 and 5
could give 55 – 43 and 45 + 35
Can they find all the possible + and

Invite children to show some of the

Ask the pupils to work in pairs and
write down two items that would be
weighed in kg and two that would
be weighed in grams. Choose
answers at random.
Give small groups a 1kg weight and
some Plasticine. Show them how to
estimate making a 1kg ball of
Plasticine by holding the weight in
one hand and the Plasticine in the
other and swapping them over.
On the board write 200g, 50g,
250g, 75g.
Give the pupils Plasticine and ask
them to make balls weighing
approximately each amount. Use
scales to find out how good their
estimates were.
As above but ask the pupils to make
1/2kg and 1kg weights only to begin
with.
Working in pairs, ask the pupils to
challenge each other to make
different weights out of Plasticine.
Use scales to see how good each
estimate is.
Discuss how close the pupils’
estimates were
