This post is available from 1 September 2016 and will be
offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of six months
(full time) or twelve months (part time)

Hours of Work:
Full time (36.25 hours per week) or Part time (18 hours per
week)
Reporting to:
Professor of Chemical Physics
Purpose of the Role:
To assist in the delivery and assessment of tutorials and
laboratory classes. To assist in the development of new
practicals and online resources.

To plan and deliver small group tutorials and laboratory classes, as specified by the
Head of Physical Chemistry.
To assess student performance in coursework and laboratory reports.
To collaborate with academic colleagues in the development of new practicals.
To contribute to collaborative decision making with colleagues on the assessment of
students work to identify and respond to the diversity of student needs.
To contribute to the effective management and administration of the School/
Department/work unit by performing duties allocated by the Head of academic unit,
including assessment of progress and student attendance.
To contribute to organising resources and effective decision making in support of
teaching. To maintain records and materials in support of teaching activities.
To develop and continually update knowledge and understanding and to seek ways of
improving own performance through reflection and analysis of feedback in order to
develop own teaching and learning skills.
Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience
Essential
Qualifications/
Education
 A first degree that includes
modules in both chemistry and
physics
Desirable
 Working towards or recently
obtained a PhD in physical
chemistry or chemical
physics
Skills/Training
Experience
 Excellent oral and written
communication skills, including the
ability to communicate complex
information with clarity
 Clear motivation to teach students
 Familiarity with undergraduate
laboratory classes in physical
chemistry
 Familiarity with Matlab
 Laboratory demonstrating in
physical chemistry
 Programming in Matlab
 Laboratory-based research in
physical chemistry, including use
of high vacuum technology
