contacted. Next step is to move beyond the plan into data collection. We are the ‘best
ever’ as far as assessment.
Liberal Education assessment – The Liberal Education Committee is moving forward –
new rubric.
AGENDA
1.
Student Retention - carry over item
Waiting for 30 day enrollment numbers; we’ve been on a downward trend starting 4
years ago; looking for suggestions specific to BSU.
Suggestions/comments:
- Do we interview people who don’t re-enroll?
-Hard to track students down when they leave; could we do phone calls through the
calling center; FA does exit interviews and could we piggyback on those; do we have
demographic information on those who don’t return (Doug will after census date); GSO
follows up with students who haven’t attended in the last year.
- The strategic plan includes goals associated with advising to increase retention.
- Laurie D. and Tony T. met about advising and CPD getting involved. Suggestion to do
something to ‘certify’ advisors using D2L – may improve retention.
- New faculty are struggling (with advising) – What is built into the system for them?
- Conversation fits well with the MAP.
- Visit with Mary Ward, she did her dissertation on advising.
-Identify a department of 5 or so that does an outstanding job; share information.
- Create a bank of tutors – make efforts to attract students who can be tutors.
2.
Update on Federal guidelines for international program - carry over item
- Discussion regarding WFU students with below minimum TOEFL scores and visa
options (J vs. F).
- Update on 1-2-1 programs from Michelle Frenzel who attended CHEPD Worker Bee
Meeting; need intensive English program for launching program; discussed transfer
course processes; 2 years at BSU will more likely be 2.5 to 3 due to intensive English
needs; these students plan to take summer school; these students will need liberal
education course; we need to require that something transfers back in final year prior to
conferring degree; Sanjeev is point person for recruiting/marketing requirements of the
program.
- RFP process is in place for an Intensive English Center at BSU; so far Winona State
has put in a bid; discussion on how this would work at BSU; would like dual signage;
students would be WSU students; instructors would be WSU employees; discussion on
SD&E involvement; the WFU student ambassadors that were here wanted to stay, this
would be a great opportunity for them.
3.
Luekens Lab - Bob Griggs - carry over item
Interested in more collaboration with internships; LEAN course being taught; provide
more service learning opportunities; we’re interested in developing a model with
Lueken’s that can be replicated to other partners. We received invitation to talk about
Biomass, just starting to get acquainted with it.
4.
International programming-Martin Tadlock
The International Day went great; student worker put in a lot of work pulling it all
together; would have liked to see more attendees. Discussion about recycling
presentations for International Experience Week. Discussion about how we get more
people to attend - move event to Tuesday or Thursday, more presence in the student
union (captive audience), work through student clubs, market incentive for International
credential.
There are 20 slots available to work at CIBT – we may lose them if we don’t send
people. The information is on the website. Question was raised whether or not Career
Services is aware of this opportunity. Discussion also on how to best prepare these
students to teach English as many of them will be doing that as part of this experience.
4.
Other
BSU is looking at holding a conference next summer on retention for Native American
students – we are very early in the discussion process.
